Custom Furniture Restoration in Progress at Shoup Woodworks! 🪑✨

We are currently breathing new life into two large, exceptionally well-made guest chairs.

Here is the restoration process so far:

Stripping & Sanding: The old fabric has been removed, and the wood on the first chair is fully stripped and sanded down to the bare grain.

Staining & Sealing: Next, both chairs will receive a rich Minwax Mocha stain and a durable protective seal.

Custom Upholstery: Once the woodwork is perfect, they are heading to our friends at Anderson Upholstery right here in Kerrville, TX for a fresh, modern look.

When this chair restoration is complete, these beautiful pieces will be listed for sale. Stay tuned for the final reveal!

This beautiful antique white oak rocking chair arrived at the shop in pieces after surviving the Kerr County flood of July 4, 2025. The owner has a deep emotional connection to this family heirloom, and I was asked if there was any way to bring it back to life.

I took the restoration process step by step. First, I carefully cleaned and repaired the flood-damaged wood. After reassembling the frame to ensure it was structurally sound, I applied a rich stain to bring out the natural grain of the white oak. Finally, I finished it off with a couple of coats of Helmsman spar varnish for long-lasting protection.

Take a look at the finished product in the photos below. I am truly honored to have been trusted with this project and to help preserve a meaningful piece of history for its owner.

I picked up this cabinet today from a customer for refinishing. She purchased it 40 plus years ago from an unfinished furniture dealer. That used to be very popular. She never got around to applying a finish so it has always been bare wood. She also wants new hardware! To update it. I'll keep track of the progress and see how it turns out.

In the world of custom woodworking, you are only as good as your word and the quality of your finish. This project—a 42" diameter exterior table top featuring the iconic Texas flag—was a great reminder that even the best materials have their own timeline.

I constructed this heavy-duty piece using a double layer of treated 1x6 lumber, designed to stand up to the elements. However, I ran into a challenge: the wood wasn't quite dry enough when I first applied the paint, which led to peeling. In this business, things don't always go perfectly on the first try, but at Shoup Woodworks, we don't cut corners to hide a mistake.

I wasn't about to deliver anything less than my best. I sanded the entire surface back down to the bare wood and allowed it the proper time to breathe and dry completely. I’m happy to say the paint job was finished today, and the colors are looking sharp. This Lone Star table is officially ready for delivery next week.

I may not be perfect, but I stand behind every piece that leaves my shop. If a mistake is made, I will always make it right—that is my promise to every client in the Houston area. Whether you have a custom vision for your patio or an heirloom in need of repair, I’d love to help you bring it to life.

This Globe-Wernicke barrister bookcase is a classic piece of American craftsmanship. Often called "elastic" bookcases because of their modular design, these units were built to last for generations. However, even the most well-constructed antiques eventually need professional attention to maintain their unique mechanical features.

This particular top section arrived at the shop with a door that had stopped functioning correctly. Upon inspection, I found the door was missing a critical dowel pin, and the internal equalizer hardware—the mechanism that allows the door to glide back and forth smoothly—required a full adjustment and reinstallation.

Restoring the functionality of these historic pieces is one of my favorite parts of woodworking. At Shoup Woodworks, we specialize in detailed furniture repair in Houston, focusing on everything from mechanical antique restoration to modern structural fixes. My goal is to ensure your favorite furniture remains functional and beautiful for years to come.

If you have a piece of furniture in the Houston area that is showing its age or needs a mechanical repair, I would be glad to take a look. I offer honest estimates and handle every project with the care it deserves. You can view more of my recent restoration projects and custom woodworking at shoupwoodworks.com.
