In the world of custom woodworking, you are only as good as your word and the quality of your finish. This project—a 42" diameter exterior table top featuring the iconic Texas flag—was a great reminder that even the best materials have their own timeline.
I constructed this heavy-duty piece using a double layer of treated 1x6 lumber, designed to stand up to the elements. However, I ran into a challenge: the wood wasn't quite dry enough when I first applied the paint, which led to peeling. In this business, things don't always go perfectly on the first try, but at Shoup Woodworks, we don't cut corners to hide a mistake.
I wasn't about to deliver anything less than my best. I sanded the entire surface back down to the bare wood and allowed it the proper time to breathe and dry completely. I’m happy to say the paint job was finished today, and the colors are looking sharp. This Lone Star table is officially ready for delivery next week.
I may not be perfect, but I stand behind every piece that leaves my shop. If a mistake is made, I will always make it right—that is my promise to every client in the Houston area. Whether you have a custom vision for your patio or an heirloom in need of repair, I’d love to help you bring it to life.
