When this dining room chair arrived at our Houston shop with a completely shattered front leg, a standard repair wasn't an option. Because the chair is part of a complete dining set, replacing the entire piece would disrupt the look of the table.

From a historic church to a Texas BBQ smokehouse, and now a 1-year-old’s new command center: this 9-foot antique church pew transformation is officially complete!

The provenance on this piece makes it truly one of a kind. Decades after the original church closed, a local gentleman gave the pew a second life inside his barbecue restaurant. Following his passing, his granddaughter inherited the piece. After braving the elements outdoors, she brought it to Shoup Woodworks to give it a third chapter—reimagined as a custom, heirloom toy box for her 1-year-old child.

The Transformation Breakdown:

Historic Wood Salvage: Completely disassembled the weathered pew, stabilizing and preserving the aged timber while honoring its decades of natural character.

Preserved Silhouette: Maintained the iconic pew profile and endcaps while re-engineering the base box to add deep, functional storage.

Toddler-Safe Engineering: Repurposed the solid pew seat into a custom lid fitted with counterbalanced, soft-close safety hinges to protect little fingers.

Today was delivery day. It will hold plenty of toys, but more importantly, it is primed to become a pirate ship, a train, a spaceship, and a lasting family treasure for decades to come.

Breathing new life into this beautiful Brazilian Rosewood dining table! 🪵✨

Recently, Shoup Woodworks in Houston was contracted to restore this stunning piece. Over the years, the original finish had completely failed, hiding the wood's natural character.

The Restoration Process:
I carefully removed the old lacquer using a scraper and sandpaper to protect the delicate grain. To ensure lasting durability and a rich, hand-rubbed glow, I applied 4 coats of wipe-on polyurethane and sealed it with a premium finishing wax.
