That concrete table sitting under the one shade tree forty miles from anywhere is not an accident. Texas basically invented it. 🌳
In the 1930s the state highway department started building roadside parks along Texas highways, and a lot of them were put up by hand out of native stone by Depression era work crews. The idea was simple and kind. If people are going to drive long distances across an enormous and mostly empty state, they need somewhere to pull over, stretch, eat what they brought, and let the radiator cool off. Thousands of them went in, and the style spread to the rest of the country from here.
Whole childhoods happened at those tables. The thermos that tasted faintly of coffee no matter what was in it. The ice chest with the sandwiches on the bottom under the drink cans. The fifteen minutes of running around in the grass before everybody loaded back up. 🚗
Some of them are gone now, bypassed when the highway got widened, and you can still spot the old stone ones if you know what you are looking at.
