Either mesquite or black walnut are used in about 90% of our projects here at Texas Hardwoods and Woodworks. The mesquite tree produces beautiful lumber that is short and challenging to use. But, the mesquite tree offers more than just lumber. One of my favorites is mesquite bean jelly. This is a good article that touches on the tree's varied uses today and in years past.

β€œI could ask for no better monument over my grave than a good mesquite tree, its roots down deep like those of people who belong to the soil, its hardy branches, leaves and fruit holding memories of the soil. . . .” β€” J. Frank Dobie, Texas writer [Mesquite is] β€œthe devil with roots.

For this customer in Albany, Texas, the architect suggested a 9 inch by 9 inch beam mantel "out of pine or fir" for their painted brick fireplace during the remodel of their home. We found this old growth pine timber that had been originally used in the construction of the White Swan Coffee Building (now the House of Blues) in Dallas in the 1920's. These old pine timbers have tight growth rings and a rich patina that can not be matched by new lumber. The clear finish is Waterlox.

This Texas native is Osage Orange, known for it's durability and yellow color. The color changes with time and exposure to various shades of brown, some even to a very dark brown or charcoal given enough time. The tree is also known as hedge apple, horse apple, bowdark, or bois d'arc. The name bois d'arc (meaning bow wood) was given to the tree by the early French settlers to the U.S. when they learned it was the tree from which the Osage Indians made their superior bows. This tree was important in our early history, as it was planted for hedgerow fencing, used in wagon wheel construction, piers for foundations of buildings, and used generally anywhere where it's strength, hardness and natural resistance to decay would be beneficial.

Nice black walnut slab, harvested here in Texas, it is to become a wide serving bar, with one live (natural) edge, and a "waterfall" end. The slab is 26 to 33 inches wide and over 10 feet long!
