Hedgehog Awareness Week in the UK (3 to 9 May 2026) is a quiet reminder that the way we care for our homes can also shape the world just outside them 🌿

Hedgehogs are now one of the UK’s most vulnerable native mammals — and they rely heavily on our gardens to survive. Small, simple changes can make a real difference:

– Leave a small gap in fences (a “hedgehog highway”) so they can travel safely
– Provide shallow water, especially during warmer weather (never milk)
– Let parts of your garden grow a little wild — log piles, leaves and long grass offer shelter and provide food for invertebrates (which are hedgehog food)
– Avoid pesticides and slug pellets where possible, as they affect hedgehog food sources and can poison hedgehogs and other wildlife too
– Check carefully before strimming or moving piles of leaves/logs where they may be resting

(A quick note: hedgehogs are naturally nocturnal, so seeing one out in daylight is generally a sign that it’s unwell, injured, or has been disturbed. In this case, it’s best to seek advice from a local hedgehog/wildlife rescue.)
