Together with our unique rustic furniture, we also offer eco-accommodation on this beautiful and sustainable farm, found on the banks of the Moordkuil River. Winter on the farm isn't a quiet season — it's one of our busiest times behind the scenes! While the fields rest, we're busy fixing, building, and gathering materials for the projects that keep River Valley Farm running. By the time summer rolls around, we'll be ready and waiting to welcome our visitors back.

Spring has arrived at River Valley Farm 🌸 The orchard trees are bursting into blossom and the hills are turning green again after winter. There's nothing quite like watching the farm wake up this time of year — new growth everywhere you look. Come visit us this season and see it for yourself!

Look what we pulled out of the ground today! 🥕

While picking carrots this morning, we found this little guy tangled up with one of our normal, straight-as-an-arrow carrots. Nature has a sense of humor sometimes!

Funky shapes like this happen when a carrot hits a rock, root, or compact soil while it's growing — it just twists around the obstacle instead of giving up. No harm done, still just as sweet and crunchy as the rest.

Every toilet that leaves this farm gets built the same way our furniture does — by hand, on-site, with the same care whether it's going to a family home or a school on the other side of the border. I still enjoy the making part more than the admin part, if I'm honest.

If you've ever wondered what goes into one before it arrives at your place flat-packed and ready to build, that's it: no factory line, just us.

I've been building something down at River Cabin the last few weeks — a proper brick braai, made from reclaimed brick, laid by hand, one course at a time.

Barefoot most days, because that's just how I like it. Spirit level in one hand, trowel in the other, getting the corners square before the render goes on. It's not finished yet — a few more courses and a coat of screed to go — but the dog's already decided it makes a pretty good den in the meantime.

Once it's done, it'll sit right alongside the fire, ready for guests staying at River Cabin to do what we do best out here: cook something over coals and not look at a screen for a while. Watch this space.

Some places you visit for the view. Ours, people keep coming back for the quiet.

The Farmhouse sleeps four and comes with a wood-fired river sauna, a veggie garden guests are welcome to pick from, free-range eggs most mornings, and a small parade of animals — dogs, chickens, geese, even a tilapia pond. Limited signal, so nobody's checking their phone. Guests keep calling it a digital detox, and more than one has said it's the first time their kids have properly unplugged.

People sometimes assume a compost toilet means giving something up. Our customers keep telling us otherwise.

Sandra says ours has "whimsical charm and beauty" — and that the compost it produces is "amazing." Ashlyn calls hers "so cute," and Cathy says two years in, the functionality and style still fit her conservation area perfectly.
