Progress in Montecito

A study in the communion of architecture and its surroundings, where the boundaries between indoors and out give way to moments of definition and interest through the subtlety of tone and texture

Do you ever wonder what a designer is thinking when they make selections for a room?

The architecture of this home is reduced to three materials: concrete, wood, and metal, yet the room is visually rich but architecturally restrained.

The rug and sofa demonstrate one of the ways that balance is achieved. There’s a relationship of repetition and scale that you register before you actually notice why: the striped rug playing on the ribs of the plush corduroy on the custom sofa I designed.

The color is substantial, but the composition feels remarkably neutral.

I love the discovery process with new clients, getting to know someone who is very often a complete stranger and is opening up the most vulnerable part of their lives to me. People are so beautiful and it is such a privilege to be let in in this way.

This client created a playlist for me, as she is a musician. The playlist was just four songs, but I wept through it and told her, “I felt a beautiful and bittersweet nostalgia for the fleeting present. It was both comforting and painful, I know this feeling well. Your expression of it conjured a desire to capture rays of warm morning sunshine, the steam rising from a coffee cup, cozy cuddles and the sanctuary of home.”

This flat lay is a collection of items that we used to accomplish just that. The images that follow made up part of the initial mood board that was presented. The music you hear was the second song on that playlist.

I don’t really share about myself. I’ve spent a lot of my life being invisible and enjoying it. As I age, I realize that I do want to be seen, known, even though I find it incredibly terrifying. If you don’t really know me, you can’t not like me. As much as I don’t want to care if I’m liked, I do care.

I grew up around horses, although I didn’t experience it that way, they were just there like the dogs and cats were. My aunt rode dressage and kept her horses stabled on my dad’s estate in New Jersey. They roamed the hilly front field during the day and were just part of the background. The first horse I ever rode was my aunt’s girl Maja, a beautiful brown Morgan, she was soft and gentle and easy. I remember the day she died, my dad and I found her in the tall grasses out in the field.

I grew up in LA and I spent every summer in NJ at my dad’s. Before I would go east, I would visit my mom’s family on their sprawling ranch in northern Montana. The wide open flat plains were a stark contrast to the rolling hills of my father’s ‘gentleman’s farm’ in NJ, my mom’s family were true cattle ranchers. It was something special - riding ba****ck as the sun set close to 10pm, holding on for dear life as we galloped across the open plains.

I notice that I save and post a lot of horses. When we travel, I always try to ride. I’ve never had a horse of my own, but I would love to.
