A client whose treasured memories were made in the Eastern Sierras, with the people she loves most, in one of the most quietly remarkable places on earth. The Ancient Bristlecone Pines grow there at 11,000 feet, some over 5,000 years old, shaped into corkscrews by the elevation and the wind and the sheer persistence of time. Imagine what they have witnessed.

She wanted a room that held that feeling. The stillness of high altitude. The warmth of being somewhere that has always been there waiting for you.

The Calistoga Modern bath was designed around restraint. Soft gray Heath Ceramics tile wraps the room, and I am still enamored by that glazed edge at the window and shower niche. It is a true Zen bathroom. Nothing competes. Texture and light do the work, and the result is a space that feels considered without announcing itself.

In our Calistoga Modern project in Napa Valley, we layered tactile materials, pendant lighting, and a small fireplace lounge to create a bedroom that encourages presence instead of distraction.
