Designer Hans Tan Studio set his students a seemingly straightforward task: join two objects. This radically simply act opened up surprising vistas for new meanings, connections and even disruptions. In Joints: A Conjunction of Poetical Design and Creative Writing, 8 writers take this further by responding to the 8 conjoined design objects. The resulting adventures provoke, pleasure and perplex, as flexuous joints of designing and writing.

Walking Sticks by Keiji Takeuchi Marco Sammicheli Miro Zagnoli

From a practical tool to status symbol, the walking stick is a universal object that has been imbued with symbolism, craftsmanship, and innovation throughout its history. Across different cultures and eras it has taken on different uses and meanings, whether agricultural, religious, ceremonial, orthopaedic or sartorial. Eighteen designers ranging from Jasper Morrison to Julie Richoz were invited to reimagine the walking stick for an exhibition at the Triennale Milano curated by the Milan-based Japanese designer Keiji Takeuchi. This elegant book showcases their designs and demonstrates how a humble object can be a source of pleasure and pride.

Presented in a slim vertical format suited to its subject matter, “Walking Sticks” is introduced by Keiji Takeuchi and includes photographs by Miro Zagnoli as well as an essay by the design curator and critic Marco Sammicheli, which explores the cultural significance of this understated object.

Geoffrey Bawa: Drawing from the Archives

The architecture of Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) was revolutionary. The Sri Lankan architect succeeded in fusing sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. A pioneer of bioclimatic architecture, Bawa incorporated materials and layouts specific to Sri Lanka’s monsoon climate and storied architectural history into his modernist designs. Although he never built outside Asia, his work and way of thinking resonate far beyond the region.

Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines, this volume spotlights the beautiful architectural drawings of Bawa’s practice. Illustrated with more than 200 drawings and photographs, many of which published for the first time, the book delves into the central, multipronged role of the medium in Bawa’s work. It also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, whist Bawa helped to shape aesthetically and ideologically.
