Aluminium vs Timber. Which really wins on maintenance?

Aluminium is often marketed as the easy, low-maintenance choice. But here's what that marketing leaves out: once the powder coating degrades, it can't be repaired. Only replaced.

Timber joinery asks for a periodic recoat. That's it. In return, you get superior thermal performance, a timeless aesthetic, and the flexibility to refresh your home's look without replacing your windows entirely.

A small trade-off for a far better result. So what do you believe, does timber still sound like the high-maintenance option?

Every part of how we operate has been set up with builders in mind.

The way we communicate, plan, and deliver. We know what it takes to keep a project moving, and we make it our job to never be the reason it doesn't.

Don’t believe us? We’ve got 30+ testimonials and counting from top builders across Auckland.

With the latest H1 building code requirements pushing for higher-performing homes, window and door selections are becoming more important than ever.

Because timber is naturally non-conductive, double glazed timber windows and doors help reduce heat transfer far more effectively, making it easier to achieve the higher R-values now required in modern New Zealand homes.

It’s one of the many reasons timber joinery continues to remain a strong option under the updated H1 standards.

A thoughtful reworking of a classic state house, designed around light, proportion, and how the spaces are actually used.

Our role was to carry that through into the joinery. Multi-lite timber windows, custom awning windows, and large sliding doors, all double glazed and detailed to suit how the home opens up to the outdoors.

I can’t speak highly enough of Guy and the level of detail that’s gone into this project, if you haven’t seen his amazing work yet, be sure to check it out at .

Why are more New Zealand homes moving back toward timber joinery?

For a long time, aluminium became the default because it was familiar and widely available. But more homeowners and architects are now looking closer at how materials actually perform in New Zealand conditions.

Between coastal environments, high wind zones, and changing temperatures, timber offers a different level of thermal performance as a natural insulator, helping reduce the transfer of heat and cold through the home year-round.

Just one of the many reasons timber joinery remains supreme.

Feedback like this never gets old.

Hear from Brendan as he talks through his experience working with the team at our recent Remuera project.

Safe to say we were pretty happy hearing this one back 🤝

Most homes aren’t built for a single moment in time.

They’re lived in, updated, and passed on because things change, and the materials you choose need to be able to move with that.

That’s where timber joinery stands apart.

It can be refreshed without starting over. Colours can be updated, finishes reworked, and components adjusted as the home evolves. You’re not locked into one decision made at the build stage.

It’s a longer-term way of thinking and one that lines up with how homes are actually used over time, not just how they look at handover.

The question isn’t whether timber joinery lasts. It’s whether you’re thinking far enough ahead to let it.
