We had a great weekend at the Division S (Taranaki, Manawatū, Wairarapa) Speech Conference held in New Plymouth.

Sandy (Rhuna) and Frances represented New Plymouth Toastmasters, competing in the Table Topics, Evaluation, and Prepared Humorous contests 🎤

Both delivered thoughtful and engaging speeches, showcasing their confidence and hard work.

Congratulations to you both on making it to the competition — you did New Plymouth Toastmasters Club proud 👏

Last night we had another successful Toastmasters meeting 🙌

We heard a range of engaging speeches, with a few unexpected similarities (completely by accident!). The evening began with insightful talks reflecting on recent Toastmasters competitions, followed by a speech exploring the lessons learned through hunting and sport.

A great night of learning, sharing, and growing together 💬

If public speaking makes you nervous, you’re definitely not alone 🙂

New Plymouth Toastmasters offers a supportive space to practice and build confidence at your own pace. Come along as a guest and see what it’s all about. 🎤

Fix Your Fear of Speaking‼️

Understand the roots of public speaking anxiety, and gain tips to conquer it. 🙂

If you’re afraid of public speaking, have no fear—it’s one of the most common phobias.

You’ve probably heard the saying that most people fear public speaking more than they fear death. 😨

And that’s true to an extent—nearly everyone has an impending fear of death; however, public speaking is something we all face having to do on a regular, even daily, basis.

That fear of public speaking is called glossophobia, and having it can prevent you from participating in✅ activities,✅ receiving promotions at work, and even✅ being able to converse individually.

Every time you speak at a Toastmasters meeting, your brain learns that what it fears is actually not dangerous. 🥰

Join Toastmasters!‼️

An✅ affordable, ✅supportive, and ✅proven path to becoming a confident communicator and leader.

Last night we had another enjoyable meeting at New Plymouth Toastmasters, and our vocabulary certainly got a workout!

Some of the words making an appearance included “insidious,” “reclamation,” and “executive dysfunction.” Not your average Thursday night conversation… but that’s Toastmasters for you.

Where else can you practice public speaking, learn new words, and occasionally surprise yourself with what comes out of your mouth?

If you’d like to stretch your vocabulary (and your confidence), consider coming along to one of our meetings as a guest - or even joining as a member. We promise the atmosphere is friendly, supportive, and only slightly insidious… in the best possible way.

Visitors are always welcome!

One of our members, Marie Rutten, was recently interviewed on the Talking Taiao podcast about her work as a Data Analyst and her volunteer role with Sustainable Taranaki.

Marie has been a member of New Plymouth Toastmasters for around three and a half years. During that time, she has built the confidence to speak in front of an audience — a skill that helped her deliver a confident and engaging podcast interview.

If you’d like to develop your speaking skills and feel confident saying “yes” to opportunities like this, we’d love to welcome you as a guest at one of our meetings — or as a new member.

You never know how far you can go.

Last night New Plymouth Toastmasters held our second meeting of 2026, and it was another encouraging and enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting will be held on the 26th of February.

Last night, New Plymouth Toastmasters held our first meeting of 2026 — and it was a great way to start the year! 🐮🎤

We enjoyed excellent speeches, engaging Table Topics, and welcomed a guest to the meeting.

We began with a round of introductions, which gave our guest a chance to learn how long members have been part of the club and the Officer roles they’ve taken on over time.

Our speakers then took us on three very different journeys:

💬 Sandy shared their story of becoming Rhuna “the Blue Moo” 🐮

💬 Frances spoke about her fascinating approach to art

💬 Isobel reflected on her Toastmasters journey and the impact it has had on her

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful speeches, and it was great to welcome a guest and catch up after the New Year.

📅 Our next New Plymouth Toastmasters meeting will be held on Thursday 12 February.
Visitors are always welcome to join us in-person or online.
