Finalist in the Designer Institute of New Zealand Best Design Award for Spatial 2026, Mass Timber Apartment Building Haven Rd in Nelson will be vying for an award on the 9th October.

Life cycle assessment confirms the building sequesters 73,647 kg of CO₂, while an equivalent steel and concrete alternative would have emitted 2,264,718 kg, more than thirty fold reduction in embodied carbon.
Socially and economically, the development enhances urban living and ultimately succeeds by aligning innovation, sustainability, and design excellence proving that simplicity, when driven by deep research, can deliver transformative outcomes.

REGIONAL WINNERS! Architectural Designers New Zealand regional awards were announced on Friday and our Pounamu Pathway building in Greymouth won regional awards in both Commercial and Kaitiakitanga. Some of the judges comments, "an intricate canopy, conceived as a pōkeka (rain cape), anchor the design firmly in its celebration of local identity, innovative consideration of materials and the genuine strength of community collaboration", "expertly promoting the cultural identity of Te Tai Poutini"

As Rachel Mechen of RM Designs said in her acceptance speech, "teamwork makes the dreamwork", our team of Ngāti Waewae and Ngāti Māhaki Makaawhio hapū together with SMART Project Management Ltd Tony Wilkins Builder Limited & Engco Engineers, understood that dream.

Its officially open! Greymouth Library has a new home on the banks of the Grey River, enjoying stunning views here and out to the coast.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with our consultants and project team, local council and development west coast along with support from Ngati Waewae. But a big thanks goes to the magnificent builders and associated trades that worked long hours through all weather, including some of the best Barbers the location could muster up. What a team, What a building!

2026 Timber Design Awards Finalists -Nelson Pine Commercial & Industrial Building Design Award - Peke Waihanga NZALS
The new Peke Waihanga NZ Artificial Limbs Services is a purpose built, 1,000m² mass timber facility designed to transform the experience of amputees across Te Waipounamu.

Constructed beside the existing building in the Burwood Hospital precinct, the project required a fast, low impact construction methodology while maintaining full functionality of the adjacent facility. This provided all the cues for a mass timber building and DfMA philosophy. The ECI approach allowed procurement and early manufacture of all mass timber components during a period of intense price escalation.
