What does every snug need? A bar of course!

We designed and built this beauty of a bespoke bar for a family home in Wiltshire.

Traditional mouldings, a hand painted finish, unlacquered brass, antiqued mirror back and a stone top to finish things off nicely. We even added a lockable drawer for those special bottles.

I really believe in the power of those small extra efforts when it comes to designing great furniture.

Decisions that sometimes seems small and difficult are easy to say no to but I think that these decisions are where all the big gains are to be had in the design process.

Just deciding to go with a cedar back and a contrasting paint colour for these bespoke wardrobe reading nooks we made for a couple in London improved the final piece far beyond the effort it took to go that extra mile.

Small extra efforts yield much larger upsides. I think it’s always worth it.

To my mind, there really isn’t any substitute to making samples to show our clients.

Timber finishes, paint colours, metals, timber species- they all look different in reality vs on a computer screen and they have real depth and a tactile nature that needs to be seen in person to form the basis of a good design decision.

When I’m working on a new piece of furniture design and I want to create a deep, rich, luxurious feel, I always spend time thinking about layering.

Adding a depth of materials - painted timber, mouldings, oiled timber, fabric, metals etc etc - that all sit together comfortably visually is what I aim for.

I’m not trying to create a loud visual effect, quite the opposite. The goal is for a piece of furniture to look very carefully considered and to reveal details the longer you look at it.

Adding texture and depth to our furniture is something that’s always in the back of my mind when I start a project.

I think the key thing is to understand how depth is read visually, through contrast rather than boldness.

Subtle shadows cast by mouldings or routed panels. Natural timber next to a pristine factory sprayed finish. Reeding, fluting, brushing or polishing timber.

It doesn’t have to be a loud statement but the subtle contrasts added to a piece of furniture allow for a sense of depth, consideration and luxury.

That extra little bit of effort counts for so much.

We designed and made these fitted alcove units for a beautiful family home in Wi******er.

Working in period interiors requires a careful hand - spaces that have existed for generations deserve a gentle touch but that doesn’t mean they can’t be practical, colourful and up to s***f for busy modern lives.
