Gazing outward with fervent gaze, an early 20th Century life-size bronze bust of Giuliano deโ€™ Medici, younger brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and cast after Michelangeloโ€™s celebrated original. The sculpture is raised upon one of a pair of substantial 19th Century French painted wooden pedestals of architectural rectangular form, each with a broad moulded top, fielded front, and deep plinth base.
โ€‹โ€‹
Set against walls in Chatsworth Cream, an elegant late 19th Century French draperโ€™s table, painted in a soft, diffused black, provides an elegant focal point. Resting upon it is a late 19th Century French alabaster and ormolu-mounted tazza, its shallow circular bowl encircled by gilt bronze and fitted with opposing mask handles. Beside it sit two wonderfully whimsical and beautifully modelled 19th Century terracotta monkeys, charmingly posed and attributed to Maison Giscard of Toulouse.

Suspended above is a striking and rare pair of 17th Century Italian Renaissance silk panels, likely originating from Venice or the Veneto region. Rich metal thread brocade is woven against a cerise silk ground with overlapping and interlacing foliate motifs. Nearby, a large-scale framed oil on board depicting flowers in a vase introduces jewel-like colour and bold, expressive brushwork. Taking centre stage is an elegant set of six 19th Century French wrought-iron garden armchairs, with graceful sabre legs, delicate curves and retaining their original weathered white painted finish.

Against deep green Flock walls stands a monumental early 19th Century Italian walnut bookcase, architectural in form and richly carved throughout. Four glazed upper doors open onto interior shelving, framed by a frieze of classical ornament and floral carving, while flanking pilasters are adorned with fruit and foliate drops of remarkable delicacy. Within sits a striking collection of early 20th Century French apothecary jars, in white glazed ceramic, domed lids, finials and softly timeworn gilt pharmaceutical labels, their restrained palette contrasting with the darkened backdrop.

On either side, a pair of 1940s French gilt-iron and crystal wall sconces bring vibrance and elegance. Rocaille rosettes unfurl into scrolling foliate arms, each terminating in three candle branches with scalloped drip pans and foliate nozzles, while faceted crystal drops catch and scatter the daylight.

Beneath, a pair of Mid-Century French two-tier brass side tables by Maison Jansen continue the glamorous feel. Their antiqued verre รฉglomisรฉ shelves support a pair of early 19th Century French hand-blown green glass preserving jars, once used for storing seasonal fruits and vegetables, now displaying jewel coloured peonies.

Completing the room is a Kingston armchair, inspired by the Howard & Sons โ€˜Ivorโ€™ model, combining classic Howard arms with deep, generous cushions and an understated sense of comfort. Beside it stands a late 19th Century Italian polychrome guรฉridon with a leather inset top and tripod base, topped with a striking French Art Deco cut crystal decanter. Architectural in form, its square body is deeply cut with stepped horizontal bands rising to a faceted neck and original flat stopper - a final note of refinement and quiet glamour.

โ€œUnder the cherry blossoms none are strangers.โ€ - Bashล

On Chatsworth Cream walls, a beautiful triptych by award winning artist Carla Groppi - โ€˜Sakura On FT Stitchedโ€™ - a mixed media piece of soft pastels, charcoal and cotton. Beneath, and reflecting the architectural forms of the triptych, is an impressive 19th Century Italian four door buffet sideboard, retaining its original green hued paint. Flanking either side, a pair of large scale 1930s French mirrored wall sconces in the Venetian/Rococo Revival taste, each formed with a shaped mirror plate and an articulated border of bevelled glass rods joined by faceted bosses.

A superb pair of 20th Century Italian โ€˜Fiandraโ€™ armchairs by Magistrelli for Cassina sit below. These generous and comfortable chairs are finished with their original loosely fitted oatmeal covers, while an elegant 20th Century French chrome and leather foldable seat sits alongside. Accompanying the chairs, a very striking Mid-Century French coffee table with unusually woven bark and contrasting conical steel legs. A Mid-Century Tommaso Barbi bowl produced by B Ceramiche in creams and gold inlays sits above.

โ€œThe thin notes of the mandolin came through the dusk.โ€ Thomas Hardy
โ€Œ
Gazing out from flock-coloured walls is a captivating Mid-Century, South European school oil on canvas depicting a โ€˜Harlequin with Mandolinโ€™, rendered in rich colours with confident, expressive lines. Framing the composition is a grand pair of 18th Century Italian water-gilded wall sconces, each with a sweeping mirrored shelf designed to reflect and amplify light. Intricately hand-carved with scrolling foliage and shell motifs, they display a collection of leather bound books, and a curated collection of late 20th Century Parisian decorative eggs in marble, ceramic, and lacquer. Each egg is mounted in gilt brass and steel, and executed in beautifully contrasting materials.
โ€Œ
Taking centre stage is a handsome early 20th Century French Louis XV style bureau plat, fitted with three frieze drawers beneath a gilt-tooled leather writing surface edged in brass, and raised on elegant cabriole legs, adorned with gilt bronze mounts. Above rests a rare trio of 20th Century Parisian books, bound in snakeskin. Introducing an architectural edge, is a Mid-Century French Jieldรฉ articulated industrial desk lamp, with a hemispherical metal shade and gallery ring, its twin arms connected by adjustable knuckle joints and mounted on a substantial circular base. Alongside sits a statuesque 19th Century Swedish Gustavian side chair, finished in blue-grey paint with cabriole legs and a hessian seat pad.
โ€Œ
To the left, a decorative 19th Century Italian โ€˜Verona Biancoโ€™ marble column fragment, raised on a modern base, adding a refined classical note to this elegant scene.

โ€œA room open to the world.โ€ โ€” E. M. Forster

Morning light falls across a companion pair of 19th Century painted doors, their original floral and fauna decoration entwine trompe-lโ€™oeil architectural panels. Alongside sits a late 18th century Louis XVI carved overdoor panel โ€” one of a pair reclaimed from a chรขteau in Flanders โ€” with beautifully carved central panel and faux trellis work. Completing the scene, a pair of 19th Century French cast-iron wall planters, retaining their original paint, abundant with Provenรงal lavender.

Beneath, a characterful late 19th Century French buffet in its original blue-grey paint stands. Inside, a long shelf sits behind two large doors, while above, mustard-yellow French confit jars and bowls of vintage marbles sit.

Nearby, a pair of painted 19th Century Versailles planters decorated with olive branches accompany a fine early Regency wrought-iron garden bench. Its riveted and reeded frame stands on lion-paw feet to the front, with elegant scrolling detail to the rear. A large-scale late 19th century French garden table and elegant chair retaining their original patina and distinguished by beautifully scrolled legs, carry a Mid-Century Spanish pottery centre table of fruit, a French โ€˜Ricardโ€™ carafe and glass, while two charming 20th Century six-bottle baskets from the Champagne region add texture and character.

To the right, a post-war Mid-Century Italian wicker salon set with four generously proportioned chairs and a matching circular table, all raised on slender blackened steel frames, accompanied by a pair of linen cushions with pineapple designs. Resting atop is an unusual 20th Century crenellated silver-plate rafraรฎchissoir adorned with acanthus leaves.
