So many of you loved Mike’s story when we shared it last time, we thought it was worth telling again.
For those who have joined us since (or perhaps missed it the first time) this is the story of how Oak Barn and Devonshire Sofas came to be.
It began, as many great things do, with a problem.
Mike, the founder of Oak Barn and Devonshire Sofas, found himself unable to source a sofa that truly met his expectations. A little like Goldilocks, some were too soft, others too firm, and many simply weren’t built with the quality or durability he was looking for.
So, rather than settle for what was already available, he decided to create something better himself.
What started as a personal project soon became a pursuit of proper craftsmanship. Mike didn’t want another mass-produced sofa filled with chipboard and foam that would lose its shape over time. He wanted something with real substance and integrity at its core, a sofa made properly and designed to be enjoyed for years.
He sourced a traditional coil spring system, designed to maintain its shape and comfort, and combined it with solid beech frames, handcrafted here in the UK by skilled artisans.
The result was a level of quality and durability that was becoming increasingly difficult to find, and the beginning of Devonshire Sofas.
That same attention to detail and belief in doing things properly still underpins everything we do at Oak Barn today. From the sofas and furniture in our showroom to the experience we offer in our Coffee Lounge, it all comes back to Mike’s simple belief that comfort and quality shouldn’t be compromised.
And all these years later, you’ll still quite often find the man himself somewhere around the Barn!
