showing at an ancestral hall, Dougang village, Jiasongling, Guangdong, China.
Featured as part of the ‘Unexpected Daily Scenery’ exhibition, we present 3 contemporary pieces within the historic walls of the local village ancestral hall. Staging contemporary designs inside the hall creates an interesting visual contrast: modern, sleek forms set against dark aged timber, exposed brick, high carved rafters, and open air courtyards. The installation creates a dynamic dialogue between centuries-old architecture and modern design practice.
Cítáng (祠堂): A traditional ancestral hall that serves as the spiritual home, community center, and architectural anchor of a southern Chinese village. Rooted in Guangdong’s Lingnan heritage, the cítáng is a traditional ancestral hall where history and daily life intersect. With its open courtyards, aged timbers, and intricate carvings, it stands as a physical memory of the community’s past.
Thanks to 2601 Product and the exhibition team brought us to the local community :))🫶
