At Mazo, every design begins with a question of purpose.
Not what is new, but what is worth living with - now and over time.

From 1931, still iconic today.

Like many of his contemporaries, Magnus Læssøe Stephensen designed a series of elegant chairs for Fritz Hansen in the early 1930s, crafted in steam-bent beech using Thonet’s method. They were light, beautiful, and accessible.

The MZO Chair stands as a testament to this approach - for many years, it was the best-selling chair in Denmark, better known at the time as the DAN Chair.

Today, it is still produced on one of Thonet’s historic factories, continuing a legacy.

“Legacy is not merely something we receive – it is a foundation we build upon. Each generation adds its own vision without losing the connection to its roots. In this way, legacy becomes alive when the next generation leaves its own mark.”

— Magnus Stephensen, CEO and Founder of Mazo

In the Stephensen family, a design legacy spans three generations. Danish architect Magnus Læssøe Stephensen (1903-1984) designed furniture that today lives on in Mazo’s collection, continuing to form a foundation for the family’s relationship with design, craftsmanship, and aesthetics.

Through his son, the designer and ceramicist Snorre Læssøe Stephensen, and onward to his grandson Magnus Stephensen, the story continues – not merely as history, but as a living legacy that continues to inspire new perspectives on form, function, and timelessness.

In a carefully restored south-facing townhouse north of Copenhagen, our Design Director and partner in Mazo, Magnus Sangild, has created a home that reflects his aesthetic and approach to design.

Here, Mazo furniture sits alongside design classics, heirlooms, and a deliberate color palette that shapes the visual temperature and mood of each space.

ARCH Chair, 1932, by Magnus Læssøe Stephensen, is part of our Legacy Collection.

“He defies conventions by crafting massive oak pieces into curved arches through steaming and formbending, demonstrating a deep understanding of wood properties, a remarkable feature of a 1932 chair.” - Magnus Stephensen, Founder of Mazo and grandson of the designer.

Though almost a century old, it could have been made yesterday. ARCH carries a legacy of ideas – of craft, of material, of design that endures beyond its time.

This is MAZŌ

MAZŌ produce and re-launch both the iconic international design classics, and the hidden gems that have only been produced in a small number in this design universe. We are serious about authenticity. We rely on it, as it is the core of our existence.

Humbled to be trusted with the exclusive rights to manufacture and launch furniture by the Danish architect Magnus Læssøe Stephensen (1903-1984), we believe the most foresighted design can be created by embracing the experience of the past. We aim though to also stay true to the revolutionary part of this heritage. That is why we partner with new and dedicated designers, who not only share our fondness of the Nordic and Japanese aesthetics and understand the balance of beauty and function, but also create new designs, in quality materials, suited for humans and homes of our days.

MAZŌ furniture is made for people, respectful of the past, yet mindful of the present. Looking for the balance between beauty and function. In a home. At the nearest café or restaurant. At the office or in the hotel lobby.
