Cape Flora royalty - the Queen Protea, also queen sugarbush, bearded protea in English and wolbaardsuikerbos in Afrikaans. Anyone know names in other of our languages?

"Protea magnifica has the second largest flower head after P. cynaroides, the king protea. The queen protea is one of the most attractive and sought after proteas. No picture can describe how strikingly beautiful and fluffy it is with flower head colour varying naturally. … The leaves are variable, large, and hairy when young but become leathery and grey green (glaucous) when mature … The massive woolly flower head is large and cup-shaped, and measures 150-160mm long and 150mm across. In nature the colour range of the outer floral bracts is broad, including greenish cream, cream, pink, salmon pink, rosy reds and deep carmine. The bract beards are variable in colour and density. They may be white, purple-black or tawny brown with the central tip being black, tawny brown or even white." pza.sanbi.org How many ways can you say this magnificent protea is fluffy? 😃👑🌷

We celebrate the King Protea - one of the motifs in our new range, Cape Flora: fire adapted, nectar-feeding bird pollinated and altogether glorious! 🔥🌷🐦‍🍬👑
King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is the best known protea, prized worldwide as a magnificent cut flower and honoured in South Africa as the national flower. 🇿🇦👑 It has the largest flowering head in the genus. It is also known as giant protea or king sugar bush in English, koningsprotea in Afrikaans, isiQwane sobukumkani in isiXhosa and isiQalaba in isiZulu, among other names. "Sugar" for the nectar they provide to beetles, bees and birds such as Sugarbirds and Sunbirds, whose heads touch the pollen presenters transfering pollen from flower to flower.

"Protea cynaroides is part of an ancient plant family, the Proteaceae, which had already divided into two subfamilies before the break-up of the Gondwanaland continent about 140 million years ago. … The amazing variety in plant size, habit, flower size and colour of the genus Protea was the reason it was named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape at will. The flower bud of Protea cynaroides looks remarkably like the globe artichoke vegetable with the Latin name of Cynara scolymus and this led the botanist Linnaeus to give it the species name cynaroides." pza.sanbi.org Pretty special! 💖

Happy weekend, everyone! 😊🌷

Continuing the floral theme from Spring Day & springboarding into Heritage Month 🇿🇦 we proudly introduce our beautiful new range: CAPE FLORA. This range takes inspiration from Fynbos, the floral kingdom of the Western Cape. Fynbos is more than a landscape; it is a living heritage — a uniquely South African kingdom of flowers, shaped by fire, earth & rain. Some still images from our Spring Day video - flowers, fabric, colour, design, sewing & Spring - all lovely things, wishing you a beautiful Spring Day. Share with a friend who loves fabrics & welcomes better weather too. 🌷🌞 Though some people *like* Winter. That's just confusing. 😅

Happy Spring Day! Yes we know it's "meteorological" Spring but we'll take it. 😊 We can celebrate again 23 September for Spring Equinox ("astronomical" Spring). 😉 What's the weather like where you are? Is it feeling Springy? The birds are feeling it, some of them beginning to gather materials to weave & stitch their nests, singing their cheerful songs to welcome the warmer weather. 🎶🐦 We chose some floral themed fabrics - some old, some sneak-peek new & (how many?) colourways of our best-seller Hibiscus Floral shweshwe design - for our Spring Day video. 🌷🌺🌸🌼🌻🌹 Points for knowing where this iconic line comes from: “Florals. For Spring. Groundbreaking.” 🤭

This transitional & changing weather has us thinking about temperature quilts. 🌡🥵🥶 Have you seen an image of one, or one in real life or maybe made one yourself? The idea is to create a small quilt block for each day with 2 parts representing the minimum & maximum temperature for the day - eventually sewing the blocks together to create a quilt that is a record of the year's temperature. The result is very pretty & colourful. One begins with assigning a colour to a temperature range using cooler colours for cooler temperatures and warmer for warmer temperatures. The parts of the block could be a circle appliqued on a square, 2 rectangles, 2 triangles etc. Since Three Cats Shweshwe comes in so many beautiful colourways & designs within each colourway, the range would be perfect for such a project. 🌈 For now this project exists in a mental space, a thought experiment. See some visual notes in the carousel. What do you think? 🤔 Any quilters who might try something like this?
