Our next tip when having stone countertops installed is to ensure that after installation you allow them to settle before use.

Once installed it is recommended that you give the tops twenty four to forty eight hours without being used, rested or leaned on or cleaned. This givens the glues and sealants time to set and allows the full weight of the stone to settle onto the substrate and or carcasses. This helps to ensure the stability of the stone, ensure it remains level and avoid early onset of slits at the joints.

An important tip when choosing stone countertops is to be honest with yourself about how you live as a family so that you can assess whether the material you are considering is suitable.

As South Africans we live very differently from Europeans – we live robustly with lots of entertaining and with kids scooting around the house of little black bikes. Most of us also have domestic help that is not common overseas.

Be realistic about how the material will be cleaned and maintained. Whether it is likely to be subject to kids climbing on it or people sitting on it. Whether it may regularly have food or wine split on it. All these should factor into your choice and influence whether you opt for a material like porcelain which can chip when bumped on the edge and needs reinforced stability beneath it, or a natural stone like a dark granite which is a little more robust but does need resealing to keep it looking good.
