Part 2 of Old Armoire's 'The Blue Painted Easel' - the finished and completely restored easel.
The client was very happy with the results.

At Old Armoire we lovingly restore antiques to their former glory; up-cycle old furniture to give 'em a new lease on life; hand-paint furniture and kitchens; glaze and antique furniture and a plethora of other services, including custom graphics on furniture, gold and silver leaf, patination (realistic look and feel of antique furniture - regardless of the true age or provenance of the item.).

We work with clients, designers and decorators, on-site or in our workshop.

So, a week or two back, a dear client phoned me out of the blue while I was strolling around Builders Express, one afternoon .
(I had done work for her in the past - quite a substantial amount of work, in fact - but that had been two years previously.)
She presented me with a predicament.
And a challenge...

Her mother, you see, was an artist - a painter, in fact.
She used a vintage hardwood studio-easel to hold her paintings as she worked.
The easel was, to my amazement, the 'real deal'.
It was, we estimated, at least 80 years old.
A turn of the century hardwood studio easel!
Not a cheap knock-off.
I was impressed and intrigued.

Then she told me the reason she needed my help...
'In a moment of madness; in an attempt to 'modernise' her easel, her mother had painted the old easel blue'.
She what?
I was stunned.
Not just any blue, mind you, but a shade that instantly brought to mind the skin-tone of a Smurf!

My brief was to restore the easel to its original condition.

Challenge accepted!

The photographs posted here record the condition of the easel when I received it from the client..

That, in a nut-shell, is what we do.
But, we do so much more...

We restore and repair antique furniture to their former glory.

We repair, restore and replace intricate plaster frame-moldings.

We Up-cycle furniture. We Down-cycle furniture.

We distress, glaze and antique furniture.

We match paint-colours to blend in with old, faded or damaged paint on vintage furniture.

We hand-paint fitted kitchens and cupboards on-site.

We strip and resurface stained and battered wooden counters, tables and kitchen-islands on-site - returning them to gleaming, hard-wearing perfection.

We gild with gold-leaf. Silver-leaf, too.

We manufacture our own glazes, antiquing and varnishes from tried-and-tested recipes, ensuring a finish that is both beautiful to the eye and hard-wearing.

Hand Painted Furniture & Kitchens

Old Armoire was established in 2008 in the town of Knysna, South Africa; where I served my ‘apprenticeship’ for five years with Eithwen at Sybaris Interiors, before opening my own business under the ‘Old Armoire’ banner. (In 2007 I was fortunate enough to travel to England with the Sybaris Interiors team to fit a hand painted kitchen into a stately home in the Cotswolds.) Due to my connection with Sybaris Interiors, I was lucky enough to continue working with the decorators and interior designers. This included repainting furniture, bespoke furniture, kitchen repainting, motifs and designs, decorated furniture, etc. This became, and remains, my stock-in-trade to this day. Early in 2018 I relocate to Port Elizabeth. Old Armoire specialises in hand painted furniture and kitchens in the French and Belgian traditions - painted, distressed and glazed - which imbues the furniture or kitchen with warmth and a subtle, faded grandeur.
