Trevyn McGowan is an example of masterful evolution and reinvention, having to date had three very distinct careers - as an actress, in interior design and now as the CEO of the Southern Guild Group which is bringing South African design to the forefront of the global marketplace.

We are inspired by Trevyn’s seamless transition through three very different careers and are impressed by the tremendous impact she and her team have had on the South African design space, both with how they have lead the way with internationalising it and how they have assisted in institutionalising design locally.
When she is not trailblazing in the design space, Trevyn is an oenophile, much preferring South African reds.

SOURCE - Recycled Glassware:

Amongst the mountains that encircle Swaziland, an 80-strong artisanal team produces refined and sophisticated mouth-blown glassware from 100% recycled glass. These artisans are true masters of their craft, creating a distinct and diverse assortment: from organic shapes decorated with delicate flecks of colour to precise works, shaped with perfect symmetry.

This distinct range of glassware is truly an environmentalist’s dream: with a production process that recycles glass, paper, fuel, and water, all done while spearheading programmes to educate children in environmental awareness, and motivating countryside clean-up campaigns.

In addition to their extensive offering, product development and customer designs can be easily and quickly facilitatedwith low minimums and relatively short lead times, allowing for complete exclusivity of shapes and designs - allowing you to develop a range of glassware that is distinctive to your brand.

SOURCE: African Bead Craft:

Beads have been used since the beginning of civilization. From as early as 75,000 years ago beaded necklaces were created using shells, and scientists view these ancient relics as an indication of the initial development of the complex human ability to communicate.
In Africa, beads have been used for centuries as adornment, currency and for works of art creating legacies of heritage and cultural significance.

Source respects this important and time-honored craft by showcasing distinctive beaded pieces meticulously executed by talented artisans. These pieces are particularly noteworthy as they act as a bridge, bringing a traditional craft form into a contemporary context and creating relevance for today’s interiors. Imbued with vitality, texture and color, wire and beads are woven to create decorative accessories, storage vessels, wall décor and menageries of fantastical creatures.

Taking the craft into a variety of scales and dimensions, pieces are available from tiny gift items to true statement pieces. Bowls and calabashes formed with neutral beads add sophistication and organic influence. Bright, rainbow colours provide a splash of happiness. The materials and production techniques create long-lasting, quality pieces at a variety of price-points and work across seasons, trends, and categories.

THE SPIRIT OF SUSTAINABILITY:

In opposition to the ‘take, make and dispose’ approach, many African makers have become trailblazers in creating products that embody ethical and ecological principles.
Utilising handcraft above mechanization and using repurposed, recycled and sustainable materials, results in products that uphold the values of a circular economy. Items that last, from materials that are respected, produced by artisans with rich narratives.
We invite you to explore our sustainable product offerings, which include wooden accessories made from reclaimed timber salvaged from condemned buildings, vessels organically handcrafted from recycled paper and natural fibres, hand-blown glassware using 100% recycled glass melted by furnaces heated with repurposed engine oil. Choose from a wide array of brightly coloured felt craft made with sustainably sourced wool from sheep who have not be subjected to mulesing, distinctive textiles made up of recycled and discarded textiles and basketry woven from the regenerative grasses of the savanna.
As the world’s outlook shifts towards a cradle-to-cradle mindset, an unprecedented opportunity has been created for products with rich narrative and positive impact - that simultaneously preserve and celebrate the traditional craft culture of Africa.
