Wood and Iron Workshop

Wood and Iron Workshop Makers of custom high quality, traditionally crafted wood & wrought iron exterior & interior furnish

The objective of Wood and Iron Workshop is to remove the normal constraints on what materials can be used for a work. Most fabricators are dedicated into one material only, be it some type of metal, wood, or stone. The Wood and Iron Workshop does not have those limitations and can work with most materials and apply them within a single work. This freedom allows for much greater artistic creativity

and truly unique works. Specialising in traditionally crafted, high quality, interior, exterior furnishings, and fixtures, a commission usually follows the path of: concept sketches, engineering and CAD drawings, material selection, fabrication, then final finishing. All mechanical aspects, such as the woodworking, metalwork, and also the electrical aspects, are all within my repertoire. My love for working with hand tools and old world traditional techniques, in the woodwork, blacksmithing, and metal work, allow my artistic passions to be expressed within the piece. The results are truly stunning and unique works, that catch the eye.

I did a small but intricate job levelling a Harley Davidson motor stand for Chris at Flat Earth Spares. The partial frame that holds the motor for rebuilding was twisted on the base frame so I needed to cut it apart and get everything plumb then weld it back together. It turned out to be finicky work but I finally got it right, but for some reason didn't take a finished project picture!

The replica Beech Bench has been green lighted so I started work on the seat and leg pieces. I am doing tongue and groove joints to make the 3 pieces into panels. I routed the grooves centre pieces on both sides first and will then route the tongues on the edge pieces.

I've completed the tool trolley. The casters where put in place then work started on the plastic trays. I made a paper template first then cut the ABS plastic sheet based on that for the three trays. The blank was filed and scraped along the edges then bent to shape using a hot air gun. A few tweaks and then the trays where fitted into the baskets.

I've been repurposing a child's bedroom nick-nak trolley into a tool trolley. This required it to be made more robust, and a few other modifications.

The first task was to de-rust it in vinegar, then wirebrush the frame pieces. Once that was done I had to braze the wire cross pieces onto the very thin tubular frame. Then I added four longitudinal inverted "U" shaped braces to firmly connect the end pieces.

After, the brazing was completed, the flux was cleaned and then the framework was spray painted with etch primer, VIP primer, then two coats of Mines Grey enamel.

The next steps will be refitting the casters, and then fabrication of plastic inserts for the baskets.

I did a small, nice, TIG welding job on a Harley Davidson brake linkage for Chris at Flat Earth Spares. It was nice because it was thick new metal and could be welded without any fuss!

Pergola Project. The rigging took some mental work as everything has to be level and square as well as being really high. The gantry needed to be raised on blocks of wood to get it to the appropriate height. This took a lot of "raising and lowering" until the objective was finally achieved. Then the posts were squared and plumbed before the concrete was poured around them.

Pergola Project. The inner plates of the post brackets where fitted and welded in place. I then started reinforcing the centre tube where two tubes had been joined quite poorly. I had to put two 200mm side plates to give it the strength it needs. Then the frame was flipped again and the final welds were done on the top side. Everything was ground flat and smooth and the exposed steel cold galvanised. The frame in now complete and the rigging of it onto the poles begins.

Pergola Project. I have everything ready to weld and needed to position the square posts on the frame inorder to get the bracket pieces in the right places since the tubes aren't 100% on dimensions and squareness. I used my chain block to lift them then did the welding.

Pergola Project. I finished all 4 post brackets pieces, cleaned the galvanising off the frame, welded in the first side of the brackets, then moved on to squaring the post tubes.

Here are the first brackets for the pergola frame and how they fit together with the 100mm square tubing that the posts will be made from. A 12mm bolt will go from the frame vertical face, through the post tube, and then through the back plate. The black markings are where I have to remove the galvanising before I stick weld.
