Our On Site restoration has also proved a valuable and convenient service to many. Hugh and Verna Lane's Fine Antique Furniture Restoration is of a high standard and has added value and beauty to an outstanding variety of antiques since 1989. We have, and are working for a range of Antique Dealers and Interior Decorators, as well as many discerning private collectors. Below is an encouraging resp

onse to our work...

Sheila Boardman
Past Chairman of the SA Antique Dealers Association
"In all the 24 years that I ran Bygones Antiques in Constantia, Cape Town, Hugh Lane was the best restorer I ever worked with. We dealt in almost every kind of antique English and French furniture, from 18th C (and earlier) oak and walnut, right through the age of mahogany and on through the curvy Victorian and Napoleon III - and Hugh was equal to it all. As the fashion for antique painted furniture took hold, Verna was able to work with antique painted surfaces and gilded items, working to the same high standard..........Whether you're a professional in the antique trade, or a private collector, I'm sure that Hugh and Verna Lane will deliver the best restoration in South Africa..." Although our main focus is Conservative Antique Restoration, with French polishing as a finish and Veneer and Marquetry as a large proportion of our repair, there are many interesting and varied projects that have passed through our workshop. These have included interesting sculptures, paint effects, a buffalo head, an elephant foot, as well as the"aging" of new furniture and architectural fittings to create a softer, "loved" look that fits in with the surroundings. Most of the latter is done On Site. Our "Mobile On Site Workshop" has proved very successful with certain pieces of Antique and Contemporary Furniture that are too large to move, or when there is a collection of pieces that need Cosmetic Repair. We always strive for Excellence, Value and Authenticity in our work and are available for Honest and Reliable Advice and Consultation.

We’ve been based in our Cape Town workshop since 1989 and now it’s time for a change of scenery. We will be relocating to the Garden Route from 1 May 2026 - our home, workshop, cats, dogs, you name it. We are so excited and so thankful to every single person who has continued to support us and our work over these past 30+ years.

Good news! We will still be fixing treasured furniture pieces, whether you’re in Cape Town or along the Garden Route.
Even though we look forward to meeting new clients from George to Plett, we can still service Cape Town clients. Please reach out if you have any questions!

In the meantime, we’ll be here packing boxes 📦

Trawling vintage shops can uncover some great finds if you can see past the old wear and tear. After removing the old bleached finish on these frames, the mahogany and rosewood really came back to life with some oil and shellac.

A pair of gilded mirror. This restoration took forever but was great fun making moulds and casting missing bits. Some were also shaped by hand and then the gilding process followed after gluing everything into place.

Perfect little side table with revolving bookcase as the base. Swipe to see nasty marquetry damages and our repairs....which are fun but fiddly work. The first task is to find matching veneers in our stash and then it's down to tracing, cutting and in laying. After a final French polish this baby is ready to go home.

Part of this table's history is that it was brutalised by someone with a sanding machine! It chewed through the lovely walnut veneer in many places. We did the repair by cutting out the damaged areas and fitting suitable veneer patches. Swipe to see how the job progressed.

A collection of wine tables with substantial water damage. These were saved from a fire. It seems putting out a fire causes as much damage as the fire itself! Swipe to see them restored.
