Four levels of a forest.
1.Emergent : A tree grows above the general level of the forest canopy.These trees are exposed to the strongest sun and winds.
2. Canopy : This level forms the roof of the forest with crowns of dominant trees and vegetation.
3. Understory : This level receives very little light .Many of these trees tolerate shade and remain at this level;others grow and replace older,fallen trees.
4. Forest Floor : This lowest level is made up of tree seedlings,dead leaves and needles,grasses,ferns,flowers,fungi and decaying plants and logs.

Hardwood forests naturally regenerate themselves and do not need to be replanted like softwood forests.For this reason , their harvesting methods differ.The preferred method of harvesting hardwoods is single-tree selection.A professional forester evaluates a forest and determines which trees are ready to harvest.This responsible forest management practice not only provides a sustaining supply of hardwood , but it also ensures the overall health of a thriving forest , including water quality , wildlife habitat , biodiversity and recreational opportunities and has allowed the volume of the hardwood forests to more than double since the 1950's.

At the end of their useful lives , hardwood products can be re-purposed , used as a combustible fuel , or returned to the earth , whereas synthetic and heavy-glued products will remain in a landfill almost indefinitely.It's clear , there really is no better or natural choice for green building and healthy home environment than hardwoods.
