We can work to a Designer’s brief, or create an entirely new range for individual projects. The Process of (Un)learning

Nine wonderful years of exploration; learning, discovering, experimenting and creating with the abundant indigenous materials, textures, techniques and traditional crafts of Bali. Now, we are ready to unlearn, relearn and rediscover this magical place that is Bali. For us, the p

rocess of learning is an everyday adventure, as well as a great indulgence, one that is both driven by our love for design, as well as the passion to experience something new, something that can touch us and add meaning to our being. Bali has been very successful in re-making itself. Throughout the decades, designers from all over the world have been coming to Bali to get inspired and create their own version of Bali. We have visited countless resorts, villas, restaurants, bars and residences which are inspired by the Balinese lifestyle, architecture, culture and people. We are now ‘looking back’ in time, to the Bali AGA – The ‘Original’ Bali… and our learning starts from there. Intrigued by a chance visit to Tenganan village in 2008, and ongoing interactions with artists and creative friends has led to the birth of INSITU edition Tenganan Bali. The INSITU project features a group of cross-disciplinary artists who produce art works based on their encounters and experiences in site specific Asian destinations. In 2010, work on INSITU edition one, on the living ancient village of Tenganan, Bali started. Through numerous visits, enjoyable explorations and open conversations, we begin to understand and are in awe of the spirit, wisdom and creativity of the Bali AGA community and their self made environment. Their simple yet enriching way of life, as well as their rituals, and the many layers of stories / myths have inspired CushCush’s latest collections of Artworks, rightly entitled: “Simple Life” and “A Tale of Tenganan”. CushCush is very excited to co-present INSITU edition Tenganan Bali at the National Geographic Store in central London from 4th – 10th November 2011, in which together with other artists from different parts of the world, we are exhibiting our latest collections of Artworks. To mark and celebrate this timely occasion, CushCush is unveiling our new look. A simple fresh look with a ‘Crafted Collection’ logo as our tribute to nature, love of crafting, and the power of creating! It is with great pleasure and excitement that we share this new phase of CushCush with you! A thrilling adventure awaits… may it touch YOUR hearts! Suriawati Qiu & Jindee Chua 20.10.11

Pari faux-shagreen tray celebrates Nature’s most precious skin. For centuries, the stingray, a creature of the deep sea, has captivated the human mind and imagination.

CushCush successfully developed technique of crafting faux shagreen that looks and feels similar to the real skin. There are numerous meticulous steps and techniques used in the process of crafting the faux-shagreen skin, much the same with the age-old techniques used for real shagreen. CushCush pays tribute to Nature’s most precious skin in Pari faux-shagreen tray by highlighting this age-old skill with contemporary design, inspired by the elegant form and distinctive (pearl) texture of the stingrays. Studying the same moulding technique used in Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, the complex-curve form of Pari faux-shagreen tray took 2 years of exploration and perfecting, before the faux-shagreen is inlayed.

Meet our newest addition to the Niskala family: Baby Rambut!

An homage to Bali's vibrant spirituality and mystique, the 'Niskala: Forms of the Unseen' collection is designed by French designer Pierre Charrié, taking us on a journey to a mysterious world where mythical creatures seem to incarnate into beautifully hand crafted objects and furniture of collectible design.

Rambut stools is one of three designs in Niskala Collection. Conceived as a cheeky duo of opposites, Rambut (meaning hair in Indonesian) is a reference to the black and white natural fibers used for temple roofing and traditional performance costumes respectively. Natural fiber artisan Jero Puspa and skilled craftsman of CushCush deftly braided and arranged the fibers, creating their lively appearance.

Don't miss our Baby Rambut, the mini versions of the original, currently on show at (place) by method as part of Road to JIA Curated - Tokyo edition. .curated

Exhibition runs from 3 - 19 April 2026

Rambut is part of CushCush Collectible Collection and output of CCG’s ADIR program, featuring design by award-winning designers, developed by CushCush in collaboration with Balinese traditional artists and artisans.

CushCush is excited to be in Tokyo this spring and we would love to invite you to come join us!

This April, CushCush is participating in Road to Jia CURATED – Tokyo Edition 2026, a curated exhibition bringing together nine Indonesian design studios, presenting contemporary works shaped by material exploration, craftsmanship and cultural narratives. As the international prelude to Jia CURATED 2026 in Bali this August, the Tokyo Edition exhibition takes place at (PLACE) by method in the heart of Shibuya from 2–19 April 2026.

For Tokyo Edition, CushCush presents a selection of signature pieces developed in collaboration with both Indonesian and international designers, reflecting the studio’s ongoing explorations on materials, craftsmanship and innovation rooted in its local context and culture.

Among the highlights are the Baby Rambut stools in black and white, a new addition to the Rambut series from Niskala Collection, a fun duo of opposites made of plant fibers, referencing the Balinese philosophy of Rwa Bhineda. Designed by award-winning French designer Pierre Charrié, The Rambut series draw inspiration from poleng, the iconic Balinese checkered textile that symbolizes balance and coexistence.

Also featured is the Dress Me Up! collection, a playful combination of furniture and textile design celebrating the Balinese way of life and architecture, designed by the French duo Clémence Plumelet and Geoffrey Pascal from Studio Marcel Poulain. Showcasing hand woven and naturally dyed textile outfits in soft natural tones that complement the lounge chair, the collection celebrates the deep connection between textiles, rituals and identity.

Completing the presentation is the Pari faux shagreen tray, a contemporary interpretation of the elegant form and pearled texture of stingray skin. The piece highlights CushCush’s dedication to material experimentation and refined craftsmanship, translating ancient traditional techniques into a modern design object.

The AA STOOL series features a simple design, and is made from 5/4” x 4” dimensional lumber. Two pieces combine to form a single stool, but they can also be separated and used individually in small spaces or for when guests arrive. When viewed from the side, the stools form the letter A, hence its name. They can be placed side by side to become a bench, creating a small public space in the neighborhood or a place of leisure in the home. When a surface is placed on top of the stools, they become trestles for a table.

The ISHINOMAKI STOOL is the direct outcome of our workshops in collaboration with the iconic American brand Herman Miller. In the aftermath of the tsunami, we investigated the state of temporary housing in Ishinomaki and found that plastic crates were often used as stools. In response, we designed a compact and lightweight piece to serve as both a chair and step stool. The ISHINOMAKI STOOL is versatile and functional, allowing you to take a breath or reach higher when you need.

Staying true to the concept of ‘Made In Local’, the Ishinomaki stool is crafted by CushCush, using locally sourced reclaimed Teakwood from old Javanese ‘Joglo’ wooden houses.

Each a unique piece expressing the natural characteristics of the aged reclaimed wood, the series is a one-off interpretation of the Ishinomaki signature design, made locally in Bali.
