Jeep meet shop, shop meet Jeep.

I learned more about problem solving and troubleshooting at 16 from wrenching on my Dad’s old jeep (with lots of help from many— I still remember Matt Wilson’s furrowed brow when I didn’t know where to find the dip stick) than I did in 23 years of school on either side of the desk.

I believe that is one of my most used skills- how to get something done with what you have on hand instead of the ever elusive perfect tool for the job. You can take a class to learn a program, but no one teaches you to effectively troubleshoot your code.

Every piece of equipment in the shop is used. Stuff breaks. I fix it. It’s fun. I use that Jeep everyday whether or not it gets driven.

Pheral Designs is now a little less feral. This space was home to a very skilled craftsman for many decades and I’m ecstatic to be continue that tradition. Now time to move equipment.

Father’s Day project for my dad’s shop!

I broke down an old shelf to make three new ones mounted on barn door sliders to maximize storage. The back shelf is stationary and the front two slide freely. Until I can get in my new shop I’ve been helping my dad update his space.

Why pay an arm and a leg for lumber when you can mill your own?

I’m still in between shops right now, but in the mean I’m milling lumber for a kiln I’ll be building soon.

I’ve been out of the shop for a bit while we relocate from Wisconsin to North Carolina, but amid the moving chaos I had a little time to make this entry way bench.

The bench is spalted poplar with katalox accents and mortise and tenon joints. It was a fun project and great wedding gift for some friends!

We’re in the shop milling some spalted poplar for a new custom piece!

We can’t wait to reveal what it will be. Any guesses?
