George I Walnut Chest on Stand
United Kingdom. Circa 1720.

Early 18th century, George I, Walnut chest on stand.  Drawers feature finely figured and feather banded fronts with the linings constructed with English walnut.  The base is largely original, with the usual historical replacement stretchers and legs.  Later but historically accurate brass drop handles on brass wires.  The top of the chest was veneered in quartered walnut panels with feathered banding at later date, which was customary.

Did you know that a surveyor’s equerre finds its roots in the Roman groma?  A groma was a surveying instrument used in the Roman Empire and allowed for the projection of right angles and straight lines.  This “modern” surveyor instrument of the 19th century was used similarly to establish 90- and 45-degree angles.

The equerre was typically octagonal in shape and was equipped with eight "visors.”  Subsequently, those visors were divided into two sets, one set with a vertical hair and one without the hair.  The visor on the opposite side is always the same type.

Take this rare example of an English brass equerre, not only does it retain its original case and brass handle, as well as the hairs in the visors, it can only be found at Mill House Antiques.  More than an ordinary experience.

No, really.  The cricket table is a simple round table with three legs.  Popular in the 19th century, these tables were used as occasional or side tables.  One could venture that the table's legs look like the "stumps" in cricket.  We're not talking about tree stumps.  No, these stumps are the three posts that support the bails that sit on top, which all together form the wicket.

Stumped?  You would be technically if you were a dismissed batter. However, there is no need to be stumped as this wonderfully simple cricket table can be discovered at

Did you know Father Time is as old as the ancient Greeks? He is probably older than that; but the early Greeks definitely associated time (chronos) with Cronos, god of harvest, who naturally carried a scythe. Over time (pun intended) Father Time has taken on many appearances, including a long beard, a robe, wings and yes, a scythe. Many have confused Father Time and the Grim Reaper as one and the same; and that is understandable. When time is up, well, it's up.

What is not up is this incredible 1750 tall case clock with its tortoiseshell Japanned case. Not only is it accurate 274 years later, but it also features an automaton movement that depicts Father Time rocking back and forth in synch with the seconds hand. To emphasize how time is fleeting, the Latin words Tempus is engraved above the rocking figure and Fugit is engraved below. The literal translation is time escapes; or as we know it, time flies.

And so will this clock, which can be discovered only at  than an extraordinary experience
