Elliott Woodworking & Furniture Architectural designer, furniture maker, and wood worker. Graduate of Lawrence Technological Univers I've always loved trees and the forest.

I started my journey as a wood shop assistant at Lawrence Tech and started to have a love for being in the wood shop. Growing up as a kid, I would spend days in the woods by my house climbing trees, mountain biking through trails, and hiking through the woods so my love for wood and trees is deeply rooted. I was turned onto furniture by some students in the furniture and mill works class at our sc

hool, but I just wanted to start creating. It started small with a puzzle and then I started to create gifts. I received thank you notes from the people I made gifts for and thought "Well, I may have a little bit of a chance to make a run with this so let's just start creating." I set yearly goals instead of resolutions because resolutions are always broken and cast aside. I thought, "I can work at a goal all year long and chip away at what I want to do." With that mindset, I became obsessed with wanting to create and it took over my mind. Once I introduced a design philosophy to my work, I became even more obsessed with wanting to create. My design philosophy is create a happier built environment. This notion is that we are creating our environment by placing things in our lives and designing the world that we inhabit. Our sense of feel is crucial for this and has to be carefully considered for success. The success of my projects is relative but I determine that my work is successful when I get thank you cards because they really go a long way.

I would like to promote a thought I had today in my shop while watching The Russian 5, a great movie about the Russian hockey players on the Red Wings in the 90s...be careful about how you receive and take in information and thoughts. Igor Larionov said repeatedly to his teammates, “you’re better than what you think you are.” I had a negative thought about my miter joints today as I was making another table. That lead me to have a very unproductive night in my shop and I had to step out. After gathering myself, I recognized the privilege I have with having my own shop and getting to explore my creative curiosities. I have it made pretty well and I’m pretty blessed. So to all of you creative tinkerers out there “you’re better than what you think you are”. Continue to do great work and inspire us all
