I'm posting this to all women in the Cape Fear area interesting in taking up tools with confidence and excitement.
I recently had an experience working alongside a number of women building some pieces for a project. I was surprised that most of the women had never used a drill. When I offered to show them the basics they all got excited and jumped at the opportunity.
That experience left me thinking that if these women had never used a drill there most be scores more that had never had the proper opportunity to use tools who would really like to.
This is only the beginning, but I would like to start holding classes empowering and teaching women how to use tools, basic home maintenance, and specific projects that would incorporate the use of tools most of us already have or are easily acquired.
The thoughts I've had so far might include the following;
-Changing a light fixture or ceiling fan
-replacing a toilet or plumbing fixtures
-Fixing leaking plumbing
-hanging pictures or shelves like a champ
-Making picture frames
-Changing a tire/ checking your fluid levels/ jump starting a car
-Hanging curtains or drapes like a champ
-Installing towel bars
-Drilling and fastening in surfaces like concrete, plaster, wood, or drywall
-Finishing and painting techniques
-Welding
These are just ideas and I'm by no means attached to any of these ideas. If you want to make a dovetail box, that's cool too.
Right now I have Stevens Hardware on Dawson St. Completely on board. Stevens Hardware employs several women that have building and tool knowledge to help anyone that walks through their doors.
I also have Morning Glory Coffeehouse, also on Dawson, willing to host these classes.
I've been in the building and furniture business for twenty years straight. I have a bachelors degree in woodworking and furniture design. I say this not to brag but to say that building and repairing things is my true passion in life and I would like women to catch that passion for themselves. It brings me joy to help other people with their own projects as well.
I'm asking all my Facebook friends in the Cape Fear area to please consider giving me any feedback on this idea.
