I keep seeing slings being used in this industry…. Stop it. 🛑

Using any sling device is asking for an injury. That’s asking for a spinal injury, it’s asking for neck injury, or adding/exacerbating cardiac problems, or underlying pulmonary issues.

we never want to push an animal when they don’t want to. I would be advocating for fear free medications. Thunder wonders. Literally anything else.

This device is absolutely not fear free.

It’s pushing “get it done, even if the pet is stressed”. It’s a new school apparatus with old-school bu****it.

A nail trim should never require more than two people. And having to fight with your patients? You should be advocating for meds.

The only time three people is needed, is when I have one person holding, one person holding peanut butter, and me doing the care. Like we did on Saturday. We held her like a baby, she got her peanut butter and itsy-bitsy spider sang to her. And dremeled. she has come so far. But some days I walked away from her. Without finishing.

That honestly is asking for a lawsuit if something happens.

Being suspended in the air is not safe and I don’t know why that’s a new thing?!!

Where are people getting this misinformation? It’s deplorable medicine.

With documented injuries from using those.

And for techs to not see the signs of stress is embarrassing. Not to mention damage to door jams and setting up and someone’s home. That’s so much work. Unnecessary.

We work in a world where there are 57 anti-anxiety medications to make our lives easier.

Pushing just to push or use these devices is more about your ego than anything else. It’s not about safety for the Pet. It’s about getting the job done because you want to get it done.

I have walked away from 15 pets without completing the job. Does it suck? Yes. But it was safer for the Pet to go to the vet for either a full sedation or medication than for me to mess with it.

If the urge to buy one of these devices is strong for you, don’t waste your money. Use your medical training and advocate for your client’s pet like you’re supposed to.

What if I’m burnt out in vet med, but I still want to try to build a Solo RVT house call business ?! Would it still work for me?

I got this question this weekend via email, so let’s talk about it.

I feel for you with the burn out. It is not an easy thing to deal with, and is very common in our field.
Even in your own business, it can be very easy to stretch yourself thin, break your own boundaries, so keep that in mind. You have to have tools to conquer the burnout first.

I have been an RVT since 2009, and started my solo business in 2016. It became my full time job in 2018.

I do offer help to other technicians, in various ways, since so many have reached out over the years. 🥳🥳

I do not recommend starting your own business without at least 7 full years in a clinical setting.

I have created 2 digital courses for Solo RVT's to purchase in 2018 that comes with a 1 year membership. There is a Quick Start Program with 6 of the basic lessons, to get you started, before jumping into the big course.

I also do 1:1 coaching via Voxer too. (1:1 coaching is an additional cost and conditional on your needs)

The course is amazing because it's a business in a box. You can start literally from square one. With no business knowledge, and it’s laid out in an easy to follow flow chart.
or if a tech already has a business going, and is looking for guidance, it helps smooth out the edges, and answer questions in real time (coaching) and streamline your processes.

I have morphed doing all Tech Appointments, any prescribed care, pet sitting and Tech Questions (client education materials digitally and via Zoom/phone. Client education is a SIGNIFICANT need in our field) into a fully functional, business venture that brings me so much more joy than I ever thought possible, not to mention the friends I have made along the way.

I work M-F 9am-1pm, and Saturdays 9-3. If I am pet sitting I work the needed days. It's definitely more flexible when needed as well, if there are snow days, doctor appts, fun days, vacation days, I make the calls and the schedule.

That being said, business ownership is not for the weak. You go from working a clinic long hours, days off, to working for yourself, so you are in charge. That can come with its own perks and pressure you have to navigate.

I still work the back end of my business on days off (sending reminders, charting, logging expenses, ect. so I'm never "off" but my work duties are minimal on off days) ....

Ordering Equipment, marketing, onboarding clients, reports, taxes, and all the things. That actually is my jam because I color code everything and make diagrams 🤣🤣 my accountant loves it.

In the course I do share every template I use in my own business, where to find insurance, how much to charge, pretty much every single detail, so you're not starting from scratch, but still need to go the legwork.

BUT businesses do not grow overnight. It takes time, diligence, grit, determination, motivation, and all the things that are only powered by YOU taking an active role in your career and successes.

You will not make your dream income your first month. But as your confidence grows, your income does too. I am very lucky that I was able to significantly increase my in-clinic income, and it has changed my life.

But I also see people start, and stop within a a year or 3 because of fear/self limiting beliefs, and their motivation fizzles out. It’s also scheduling your life/appointments days to weeks in advance. Not everyone is good at time management skills. That is a significant part of this endeavor. Not everyone is meant to run a fully functioning business full-time.

it is a lot of work. It’s a lot of showing up when you don’t want to. It’s a lot of doing the work when you don’t want to.

But it’s knowing that it’s worth it. 💪🏽💪🏽

SO a lot of business is building confidence, self worth, and healthy boundaries.

Not only that, but it's just ME in my business. I am showing owners how to hold for me, we are having conversations prior to me walking in, to make sure it's a good fit. I also check ALL new pet vet records, then going over polices and procedures.
And executing client communication regularly.

I need to make sure they understand this is owner inclusive, and doing this in their homes.

I can't take on a 90 # dog that needs fear free meds for a nail trim, if the owner is 72 in a wheelchair. That would not work. Make sense?

I do not take on every client. my business is now 10 years old, and I have recognized patterns, and have honed my client finding skills, intuition, and can read a vibe immediately over the years. (Ps: I love teaching this stuff!!!!)

I post business related content/videos to help others via my own experiences at the time.

I get asked all the time about tips and tricks for your vet tech business. “Can I pick your brain” has officially become my least favorite cringey makes me wanna vomit phrase 😡.

BUT I am going to fill you in on some insights.

No, tips and tricks will not grow a business alone. Consistency, relationships, and determination are crucial.

Top 10 things that works for every business owner when they first start out:

1: talk to at least 3-5 new people a day or show up somewhere daily

2: go to any free networking event you can

3: learn how to utilize your virtual business card or carry some.

4: small tasks daily = big rewards in the long run

5: Read books. I have at least 7 in the course to start with.

6: always remain coachable. You don’t know everything. Never feel like you can never stop learning. In life and in business.

7: don’t let imposter syndrome sneak in. Know your truth.

8: Never fall victim to shiny object syndrome. commit to one course and can create consistency.
When you bounce around you never build foundation.

9: Find hobbies outside of work that light your fire.

10: gratitude. Always say thank you. Say thank you for the good times, the ebb and flow, and learn from the mistakes you make.

And a bonus: INVEST.
That’s the one that no one actually wants to do. No one wants to put money where their mouth is. But let me tell you, when you invest and know it’s worth it, then you have skin in the game.

But so many won’t. Why? I have a theory.
Now it’s up to you. and not just looking for a quick fix. You’re scared. You don’t want to start and fail. So you stay stuck in a self sabotage loop.

And only you can break it.

When you invest, you also are putting yourself out there. You’re showing yourself that you can do something. But when you hide and just ask for a free advice, that’s where you’re wrong. That’s where you lose. There are so many free groups. But it’s lacking the structure. The foundation. It’s pieces and parts of what you want so you spin your wheels.

You have to act differently. Respond differently. Take accountability for your actions.

Only then will you grow. No one can do the work for you. No one can build your business for you. No one can give you cheat codes.

Do it for you. Show all the way up. Even when you don’t want to.

This course has all the pieces. The parts. The foundation. Stability.
And coaching if you want it. I can be with you as you build! Wouldn’t you want support ? I would. I did. I had coaches too. To hold me accountable. To call out my excuses. Until I did it differently.

It’s been stupid cold up here in Cleveland, Ohio. Icy, negative temperatures. A couple snow days for the kids. Unrelentless winds, making house calls so much fun.

I have weather policies for a reason. If there’s a snow day, I will not be coming for the majority. (Unless pet sitting. Pet sitting takes precedence over policy).

If their driveway is impassible I’m not coming. If I get there, and it’s impassible, I’ll be charging a fee. The entire appointment cost actually. I travel to different towns with different weather conditions per town. I’m also carrying my house call bag. I’m not risking falling because a driveway isn’t cleared.

On my onboarding phone call/wrap up text, every single client gets a copy of my weather policy. It’s also posted on my business page.

And once a year, all active clients get a brief recap of policies in January as a reminder of all the things not just weather, but regular policies and procedures as well for the new year ahead.

(PS: all of my active policies and procedures are in the course for you to utilize! I have actually updated a couple of them in the last couple weeks! And every time I make an update on my forms that I use personally in my business, you also will benefit from that. It may take me a couple extra weeks to get there, but you will get a copy of it if you are actively in the course) 🌸

If the roads are unsafe, I’m not risking traveling in crappy weather just for routine care. It can wait a couple days if necessary. It’s not the end of the world.

I have had to play musical appointments for a couple days this week and last week.

Luckily, my clients have been around long enough that they understand and are appreciative. They are also decent human beings so don’t want me out in the crappy weather either.

And it has really solidified a random theory I thought the other day.

“The Mailman Theory.”
People expect delivery drivers to come out in all kinds of weather. Mail delivery, Amazon, FedEx, UPS.

Guess what? That’s not me. That does not have to be you, either.

You don’t have to risk dying in a snowstorm for clients.

It’s not worth it. Move the appointment.

You have permission.

Give yourself permission.

Have I driven in snow storms? Absolutely.

Actually I got annoyed and stuck in a pretty severe storm this weekend. No warnings were given, except an alert on my phone three minutes before it slammed us with white out conditions.

I only had two more appointments left, so I powered through. But literally only because I was equally distant between my client and my house (20 minutes).
By the time I was done at my client, it had cleared up. But it took me an additional 35 minutes to get there. Otherwise I would’ve canceled or at least delayed a couple hours.

Being a Solo RVT is not for the weak. But it’s my favorite. I’ve built a life around doing what I love. Veterinary medicine. 🐾 I created something from nothing. A new path.

But I’m not in a clinic, I have not been behind clinic walls since 2018.
And I’ve never looked back. 😍

Everyday it requires consistency, diligence, patience, balance and dedication.

It’s just me. The pet owners.
Every single day.
But that’s why I love it. It’s more personal, I have more time to discuss pet care. It helps with owner compliance when they understand treatment plans, or hire me to assist.

It’s not a hobby. It’s a livelihood. It’s not a “little business” but a statement. That it’s possible to be a Solo RVT and make an impact. And thrive doing it.

If I say I’m going to do something, I do it. I show up.

No not every day is perfect. But I every day is worth it.

A business model others aim to achieve. I see it. It’s catching on. The Mobile Life as a veterinary professional is catching on, and for good reason. People need it!

I haven’t been into a vendor fair in a long time! Here is what I recommend bringing!
It was so much fun !

If you haven’t been to one, I highly recommend it!!

🔴 table (many times it’s provided, but sometimes not)

🟠 tablecloth

🟡 packing tape/duct tape to secure items

🟢 business banner/poster

🔵 either business flyers or sheet with services offered. Don’t put prices on it!

🟣 I brought copies of my book for people to buy - I have a cc reader & venmo

🔴 business cards

🟠 grocery bags & pens

🟡 Clorox wipes & sanitizer

🟢 chair

🔵 tote bag for merch

🟣 snacks/water

◻️ also, depending on the theme of your event, bringing dog treats, or pens, or anything like that is always fun! I bring dog treats that’s pretty much it though.

Merch gets expensive so don’t feel you need to buy stuff.

I put QR codes in multiple places with links to my website for ease of communication as well.

Remember: network events are about building RELATIONSHIPS and planting seeds. Learning about others. Not making sales.

Onboarding comes later 😉

I would never do a remote work from home job. I tried. Couldn’t stand it.

I built a business from home. I burned it down. On purpose. It’s not that I couldn’t do it. It’s that it wasn’t what I wanted. it wasn’t who I was.

And guess what?! That’s OK. You don’t have to be successful at every single thing. Just what you want to do. And keep doing it until you are successful at it.

I like to work with animals every single day. I love to see their excitement. I love to see the confident owners learning new skills to help me.
I see posts every single day that veterinary professionals want to work from home.

Yes there are options out there.

However, do you really want to work from home?

Do you really want to not see animals every single day?

Do you really not want to make a bigger impact in their lives every single day?

It’s simple. You don’t. You may think you want to. But you don’t.

The truth is, you want the best of both worlds. But friends: it’s possible.

There are many aspects of my job that I can do from home yes.
