A Stanley Bailey no 5, type 13 I believe, in the shop for a light restore and tuneup. All of the pieces were media blasted using walnut media then run over a wire wheel on the grinder to clean and polish them up. After that the little pieces get a Dremel with a wire wheel taken to them to get those little spots that the larger wheel can't get to.
The iron is going to take a bit more work than I originally expected, it's not square by any definition. That's fine, I'll run it through the slow speed grinder to re-establish a primary bevel then switch to the Worksharp to finish it up. When I'm done it'll be square and quite sharp. After that's done I'll move on to the frog, tune that up then when that's finished I'll work on the base.
If you have a plane that needs to be restored or tuned up, message us for details and exact pricing. Generally though a no 5 costs around $25 to have a light cleanup and full tuneup done, excluding any parts that need replacement. If you want the wood refinished it's another $10. Your choice of finish but we usually do 5 coats of shellac on the old Stanley planes.
If you want a complete body restore we will media blast the frog and body then finish it with semi-gloss engine enamel for $20. If you're a purist, like I am, we can apply real japanning for an additional $15. This is our modern version of Stanley's japanning recipe circa 1910-1930 without the nasty ingredients that cause 17 types of cancer. This does take longer to apply, it's baked on in successively higher temps then needs 30 days to cure before shipment. After it's done it looks *exactly* like what the plane would have looked like when it came out of the factory.
All pricing above is for a Bailey no 5, other planes sizes are different prices based on size. Message us for details.
