Here is a kitchen island I constructed using primarily reclaimed poplar lumber from a 200 year old log cabin. The Island was constructed using old world mortise and tenon joinery and hardwood pegs. Built to last a lifetime. NOT a Wayfair import. This is a craftsman built piece of furniture constructed in Tennessee. The island in the photos is 3’x 4’ and 36” in height. The size can be adjusted to fit your specific kitchen space. This particular island is sold but I can construct one to fit your needs in about 3 weeks. It is priced at $2,100.

This is a live edge bench with a hand wrought black iron frame that I made a few years ago. The wood is beautifully spalted sycamore. The bench is 7' in length and I need to make room in my shop so I am selling a few pieces. I am asking $1,700. If you are interested please email me or give me a call. Thank you!!

Hello everyone! Here is a quick up date on the project I previously posted about building a dinner table out of a huge walnut tree that had been struck by lightning. I posted videos of the process of sawing the large walnut log into slabs.

The slabs have been slow drying in a large temperature controlled kiln for about 3 weeks. I expect it to take another week or to to reach a target of approximately 8% moisture content. In the meantime, I have fabricated and constructed the knock down base using previously dried walnut material from my inventory.

When the table is complete, I will be able to dismantle the pedestal base and remove the top for the purpose of transporting the table and moving it into my clients home. The top will measure 8’x 42” wide and have a removable 8” leaf at each end.

Now that I have the pedestal base complete, I intend to start applying the finish prior to assembling the base with the top. I will be using matte finish acrylic polyurethane and will apply 6 to 8 coats. I will keep you all posted on the progress.

Here is a bench I just finished for 3 Marias Design Studio in Nashville. It will be part of a renovation project for a real estate company office in Columbia, Tn. The bench is all mortise and tenon construction (no metal fasteners) and is built with maple lumber. The dark streaks you see are from a fungal discoloration caused by wood boring ambrosia beetles. The wood has been kiln dried which kills any fungus or insects in the material. It is highly sought after by woodworkers for its unique properties. I try and buy any that I come across to keep in my inventory of unusual and distinctive woods.

Here are a couple of photos of my next project. This is a very old and massive walnut tree that was cut down in my clients yard because it had sustained significant water damage over the years after it had been struck by lightning. It was very close to their house and had become a liability. The tree was cut down and the logs were salvaged by my clients.

They have commissioned me to build a large 4'x 8' dining table with expandable leaves. There were two 10' logs salvaged. This log was the second log and was cut right at large fork in the tree which should exhibit an exceptional cathedral type grain pattern around the fork area. The log was nearly 36" in diameter. My intention is make the table out of two separate slabs cut from the very center of the tree, which I will book match the grain pattern so that each side of the table top will be a mirror image of the opposite side.

It took 3 people and 8 hours mill the log and we had to turn it over by hand during that process with help from the sawyer, Danny Martin's Kubota tractor. It's going to be a challenge but that is what I love about this work. Taking a beautiful, old but damaged tree, and making a family heirloom piece that will hopefully last another 200+ years.

This is my most recently completed project, a 5' round White Oak pedestal table for my client's newly constructed screened in porch. It will serve as a social gathering place for after work cocktails and informal dinners. The 5' round shape will comfortably seat 6.

Here are some custom poolside benches we constructed using local white oak posts and finished with Brazilian walnut lumber (at the request of our client). Brazilian walnut is also known as IPE (pronounced EE-PAY) is one of the most dense hardwoods available and dulls saw blades and breaks drill bits at an alarming rate. We prefer to use local material from sustainable sources but made an exception for an old client of ours. Both IPE and white oak are extremely weather resistant and need no finish applied and will last a lifetime. IPE is imported from South America but is strictly regulated and only imported from sources that practice responsible and sustainable forest management.
