We were recently contacted about a cabin on Seven Stars Lane, just a short distance from The Tree Trunk. A hand hewn home, which was moved from its original location in the 1980’s, was being dismantled. There, on Seven Stars, the home sat on a brick foundation. It is said that three sides of the cabin were chinked by a sober man and the fourth a drunkard. It is on this fourth side that water started to settle between the beams and damage to the home took place. It was carefully disassembled in 16 days. We transported the solid Oak timbers back to the sawmill.
From the mid 1700’s to the mid 1800’s the common way to make a round log square was by… no, not gas power, but man power. Fueled by the ambition of one to make shelter, a home, to raise a family. Trees were bucked using a cross cut saw. Dragged from the forest with horses. Man then swung a broad axe, an adze, over and over again, log after log until each was square. Formed dove tails on the ends. Then assembled his home upon the rock foundation he laid, one beam at a time. With a deep appreciation for this effort, we will make our best effort to preserve each salvaged piece. These will be repurposed as posts, as beams, as mantels, floating shelves and more. Continuing to be appreciated and serve purpose for generations to come.
