I might get some pushback from this—but after 20 yrs in this business, this is my Biggest Red Flag.
A huge red flag 🚩 for me in the Design industry is when a General Contractor/Builder tries to take on the role of Interior Designer. The best Builders focus on building—and bring in experienced designers to handle planning and aesthetics. When a GC starts controlling floor plans, materials, and design details, that’s usually someone who lacks experience.
I’m not referencing full on Design-Build firms. Firms who have a showroom/office with multiple employees who are licensed in interior design, architecture and cabinetry. Those firms are using experts.
Do your research. Ask the hard questions. Ask for references. Ask to see pictures of finished projects. Instagram has a way of making everyone an “expert”.
