🪵Sawmill Sunday🕺

Sawmilling makes a mess! One of the MOST important jobs at the end of the day is blowing all the sawdust off the mill. The only thing strong enough for this task was a big, temperamental, gas powered leaf blower…..until now😳

When Storm Industries reached out to demo the Jet Blower Pro, I knew right away what I would try it on. It is incredibly light and can be ordered to work with most battery systems. As for the performance, WOW! You can see from the video how well it works. I was amazed how strong it is, right up there with the gas powered blower. It is also adjustable with the trigger from a hair dryer to a hurricane💨. The compact size will save us a ton of room in the truck for everything we need on Sawmill Sunday!

Alright, alright, alright😍

(WeCreat Lumos ULTRA (6 watt UV and a 60 or 100 watt MOPA laser all in one)

It is incredible how much different the results are for a UV laser to a diode or CO2 laser. The UV laser doesn’t really burn and that is huge for woodworking. Here is just a little something I wanted to try to see how well it works.

My logo was deeply lasered into a 1/8 (3mm) piece of cherry giving it a 3D look. It was then cutout in the same file that only took two and a half minutes total to complete everything. With my cnc I created a pocket in some walnut to inlay the logo. You could also use the WeCreat Ultra to make a template to use with a router to do the same. The fit you see in the video was with no glue or sanding at all! No allowance was even made for the kerf of the laser, I am sure it can be fine tuned but not even sure it needs it🤷‍♂️

This opens up the ability to inlay a logo on a finished piece….maybe even in brass using the MOPA option on the Lumos Ultra. Maybe even…..batching them on the WeCreat conveyor!

Not bad for somebody who is just fumbling through figuring out the laser game.

Head on over to WeCreat for more info on the Lumos Ultra

🪵Sawmill Sunday🕺

Sawmilling isn’t all about 30” walnut logs, quarter sawn oak, or wide and clear 8/4 cherry slabs……..sometimes you are milling dead cedar trees into 2x4’s😳

The customer wants what they want🤷‍♂️

🪾Sawmill Sunday….

….Is BACK🕺

An end of the winter (hopefully) milling of some oak. You can see from the movement in the boards there was a whole bunch of internal stress in those frozen logs.

The best way to see how much cutting you get done is the sawdust pile!

Fun Fact: This was sawmill’s first birthday! Not a better way for a sawmill to celebrate.

😳Oh My😳

THIS is the WeCreat Lumos ULTRA (6 watt UV and a 60 or 100 watt MOPA laser all in one🕺)

When WeCreat contacted me last year to try out this future new product I had no idea what a UV or MOPA laser was (true story)……the Lumos ULTRA is both! When I figured out what they can do…oh yeah, I wanted one for sure!

Apparently, it will be able to engrave, cut and emboss, works on materials such as glass (no treatment needed), acrylic, wood, metal leather, plastic rubber, silicone, ceramic, slate, fabric, paper and……….even INSIDE crystal! That covers just about everything I would ever think to use a laser on!! Pretty incredible.

Now, this is my 4th or 5th WeCreat laser. As with the others this one was well packaged and arrived damage free. It was fast to setup and get cutting. I was already familiar with the free WeCreat MakeIt software that is very easy to use. It only had the UV settings for balsa wood on my version. All I did was turn up a few things for the video to see what would happen, what could go wrong🤷‍♂️

As a woodworker it made sense to try the UV laser on wood. I’m amazed how well it work. No burning, sanding or cleanup, none. In the video you see my first attempt, and exactly how it came out right from the laser. If you ever laser engraved wood with a finish you know it is a problem. Pretty sure this will work with zero issues on the finish, I will have to give it a try. Looking forward to “embossing” designs in wood. I am already thinking of some cool feature to add to furniture pieces.

Next up……I will be trying the MOPA laser. First, I have to figure out what it is…..off to the internet. As with all the WeCreat products I have tried I am sure it will be easy, even for a beginner like me.

Check out the Lumos Ultra further at WeCreat.

Did I miss anything?🕺

I think I may have been gone for a couple days, weeks, I’m not exactly sure🤷‍♂️

Appreciate those who noticed and reached out.

Nothing was wrong, all is well! I went away for a week and didn’t post, that turned into a two week break. Then……well, it went longer.

Prior obligations have drawn me back in. Now that I got filming again I feel like I’ll be back steady again.

What I missed most was checking in on what everyone else has going on. Checking back in just stressed me out, so I literally missed it all.

Believe it or not the shop continued without social media😂

The picture shows what I have on the bench right now, in actual real time. A new one for me….

Any guesses?

Ever eat wood?

Me neither….but here we go🍴

My oldest son brought me back a jar of edible wood from Argentina. It was quite pricey compared to the local food. But, it is supposed to give you magical powers so who can put a price on that🤷‍♂️

It is a traditional Argentine preserve made from native trees, usually with Yacaratia wood. The tree is in the papaya family, is fast growing (as you can see from the growth rings), and is boiled and sweetened.

The wood preserves are a regional delicacy often served with cheeses and meats like charcuterie.

Using a toothpick, you can eat wood, off wood, using a sharpened piece of wood🕺

It is actually very good. The wood is in a sweet syrup. You definitely can tell you are eating wood but it is very soft and kind of tastes what you would expect. The boiling makes it very soft, almost like a fibrous jello cube.

I’m still waiting for the magical powers🧙‍♂️

Try it🤷‍♂️

I was reading a post yesterday about how terrible red oak is for furniture. The point of it was red oak is a giveaway you are a new woodworker😳 Once you get better you move onto better material.

There are basically two trees sold as red oak lumber, northern and southern. Southern red oak has much more reds and pinks in it, usually the stuff you see in the big box stores. Anyone still remember the 1980’s😬 Northern red oak is much more brown and tan.

Posted are some quick shots of a built in I recently finished for my own home. Some of you watched on Sawmill Sunday this northern red oak get dropped, milled and dried in the solar kiln. Hey, I like it🤷‍♂️

Corners😵‍💫

The first time I used this funky miter joint is for a picture frame I walk by everyday. It’s one of those projects that makes me smile.

The joint is awesome and was taught to me by .peart I have used it a few times since and it never disappoints.

Flea Market🪰

It’s early in the season for tag sales and flea markets……but so far this is in the lead for my favorite find of 2025.

This is a Japanese chisel / timber frame slick. I do live in a timber frame home we built, and I do like chisels😂

🍀Good Luck to every woodworker on the hunt for that Stanley #1 at the bottom of a box under some old caulk guns and scrap copper fittings😁
