“What works good is better than what looks good because what works good lasts,” Ray Eames once said. In fact, along with George Nelson, she and Charles urged Herman Miller owner D.J. De Pree to create a space where designers could experiment on product prototypes and in 1958, a permanent Technical Center was built. Decades later, the current Test Lab looks and sounds different, but its commitment to testing quality remains the same. In today’s lab, our ergonomic chairs are bent backward, spun around, prodded, and poked—and then given a pass or fail, all to guarantee the chair’s 12-year warranty.
