3 more spoons I made last week. The long cherry one with the oval bowl is 14 inches long! The handle is around 1/8 inch thick. I don’t know why I constantly push myself to make smaller and more delicate things, but I do. One problem I run into is that standard tools are just too big. I’ve been using the mini spokeshave from Lee Valley to shape handles and the outside of bowls. The tiny plane is good for cleaning up hand sides and some rough shaping, too.

I made a spoon yesterday. This new one is 13 1/2 in. long. Tiger maple. The bowl is painted with acrylic. It was my birthday, so it’s a gift to myself…both the spoon and the time in the shop. Furniture making has been my job for almost 19 years now and sometimes it’s not fun like it was back in my hobby days. I guess carving spoons is now my hobby. It’s relaxing and fun. I’m not trying to sell them and I don’t care if they’re practical. And I make them using whatever tools I want, including files and sandpaper. I love the Japanese spoon gouges I have. Last photo shows other spoons I’ve made.

The ring box for my wedding (next week!) is complete. It’s made from Huon pine, a lovely wood that I grew fond of while teaching in Australia. It grows only in Tasmania there’s also some cocobolo (round dots), basswood (liner), and fabric from Japan. I have never made anything perfect, but this box comes close. I also made 4 of the box in cherry, and those will be up for sale soon.

My daughter graduates from Colgate University this weekend. As one of her gifts, I remade a little box that I know she likes. She thought the original was too small so I made her’s slightly bigger. The original was 2 1/4” square. The new one is 2 1/2” square. I also added a fabric covered liner inside. The paint is acrylic. The box body is western larch, from a 2 x 4 I bought at a home center. The original pull is cocobolo and the new one is walnut. I like it!

This little box with tiger maple lid is not spoken for, let me know if you are interested. Otherwise, when it rains it pours, as they say. I have around 20+ boxes currently in progress in the shop. Thankfully, I’m a native Floridian and love a good storm. The bulk of them will ship to an online retailer next week.

I’m very lucky that folks out in the world want to own my work, but that someone would want a box of mine to be part of their wedding is beyond amazing! All I really want is for my work to bring some joy into the lives of others. I’ll thrilled that one of my boxes is part of a much bigger and better joy! Two boxes I completed yesterday. The first is a 3 in. square, basswood painted with slate milk paint, tiger maple lid, fabric lines the interior. It’s available ($150+shipping). DM if you’d like it. The second I made on commission. Basswood body, milk paint, figured makore veneers on the lid. Lid has no hinge put swings up and stands when open.

Box lid made from squares of Douglas Fir end grain. It’s like a tiny cutting board. Do you like it? Box body is basswood painted with green milk paint. Interior lined with fabric that belonged to my mom. She was a serious and very talented quilter. In the years since she died, I’ve looked through her LARGE fabric collection and pulled out my favorites.
