I am in the process of refinishing a very large pine table with six ladderback rush seat chairs. The table is done and one of the pictures shows the original dark tabletop, a stripped portion of the table, and two of the finished leaves that bring out the wood grain and coloring. The finished table with the black painted pedestal is also pictured. I have also completed one of the six chairs. Plenty more to do. I think this one is spoken for already - going to my sister if she likes itl

Just finished a cute little farm table. It's a softwood but I am not sure what kind. The top boards are naturally colored a beautiful reddish brown color. They have been coated with slow curing varnish. The base has been painted matte black and it is also varnished for protection. In addition to the natural coloring, the top boards are a bit uneven and warped with age which makes the piece very unique and rustic farmhouse in style. It is 47 1/2 inches long and 23 inches wide with the sides down, and 37 1/2 inches wide with the sides up. $140.

This is the second piece that I just finished - a solid mahogany desk probably from the early 1900s. The top surface was sanded to the original mahogany wood and then was oiled and coated with four layers of slow-curing varnish for a smooth glass-like finish. The rest was painted matte black and also coated with one coat of varnish for protection. The legs are elegant and there are pillar carvings on the four sides of the desk and ball and claw feet. Selling for $180.

Well it has been awhile since I have had some new interesting pieces to work on. Brought in two last week and one is a true mid 1800s antique desk. It appears to have the original hardware and I have kept the old patina and coloring. Check out the hand cut drawers! All of the drawers work. This is a really neat and very old piece. Selling for $340.

I came across an antique drop leaf table that was in a sunroom and was used to hold plants for many many decades. The center board and one of the sides was clearly used for that purpose while the other side must have remained down and against the wall for the whole time. As a result, the center and one side has the stains and markings and colorings of a century of use (which is what you want to have to make the piece interesting), and one side looks almost new. I had a choice - sand everything down to the original wood so it is nice and new and "pretty" or just refinish it as is. I chose the latter because I hate to get rid of the character of a piece of furniture. I would be interested in comments on my choice.

One of my good sources for furniture had made an attempt to refinish a damaged cedar chest. He got tired of it and sold it to me. I stripped off the damaged veneer and exposed the bare cedar. The top is actually chestnut I think. Anyway, I sanded it, oiled it and added a varnish and it came out really nice. The color and grain of the cedar is very cool.

I haven't brought much out of the workshop lately but I just completed working on an antique clerk's desk. This piece is old. It has the hand-made nails as proof. Only the desk part in the photo is pre-1850. At some time later on someone built the matching stand for it. The desk has signs of use (the carved name "Jim" on the underside of the cover, and someone drilled a hole in the back for some reason. The finish is a bit uneven due to the original 165+ year old wood underneath. Plenty of room inside too.
