"I want some colour, but I don't want it to feel dark."

We hear that on nearly every small kitchen, and there's a straightforward answer: put the colour underneath.

This one is sage on the bottom, dove on top. Flip it and the room stops working. Dark wall cabinets sit at eye level and above — they absorb the light bouncing off your counters, and in a galley they close in on you. You physically feel the ceiling come down.

Below the counter, the same colour does the opposite job. It gives the room a base to sit on. The light uppers keep the top half open, and the whole space reads taller than the tape measure says it is.

Then there's the part nobody mentions until year two: base cabinets take a beating. Shoes, the mop, the dog, bags dragged in off the counter. A mid-tone sage absorbs all of that. A pale finish down there shows every mark inside a month.

The brass.

In an all-white kitchen the hardware isn't a detail, it's the entire warmth budget. It's doing the job a wood island or a colour would do somewhere else.

Which is why it has to be consistent. Same antique brass on every pull, every k**b, the tap. The temptation is to mix finishes for interest — in a small all-white room that just reads as unfinished.

One finish, everywhere. Then it looks intentional.

The most common thing we hear about a small kitchen: "there's just no storage."

Usually there is. It's being wasted.

Every narrow kitchen has awkward leftover space — a few inches beside the fridge, a blind corner by the range, a gap above a window. Stock cabinet runs handle those with filler panels. Painted plywood, nothing behind it.

This kitchen got them all back. The strip beside the fridge became open cubbies for everyday mugs and plates. The range corner got a working corner cabinet instead of a blind box. The lower run is drawers rather than doors, so you can see what you own without getting on the floor.

And the backsplash runs all the way up to the wall cabinets instead of stopping at four inches. That's a small upcharge doing something specific in a room with a lower ceiling — it pulls your eye up, and the space stops feeling like a corridor.

A question we get a lot: "if I do the kitchen in stained wood, do the bathrooms have to match?"

Short answer — no, and they probably shouldn't.

Stained cabinets are making a big comeback, and for good reason. Homeowners are moving away from cold, all-white kitchens and embracing the warmth, beauty and authenticity of natural wood. But rooms are not interchangeable. A kitchen with wide windows and a bathroom with a single fixture receive completely different light, and a stain that looks perfect in one can look muddy or washed out in the other.

This project is a good example of doing it properly. The kitchen uses a warm medium stain, with crown detailing and a corner run fitted to make full use of the space. The primary bath went several shades lighter — a soft oak vanity with an open shelf beneath, vessel sinks and a quartz top with a low backsplash.

The two rooms are unmistakably from the same house. What connects them isn't the wood tone. It's the shaker door profile, the matte black hardware running through both, and the light quartz surfaces.

That's the difference between a home that feels designed and one that feels renovated in pieces.

"We need a bigger kitchen." We hear it constantly — and most of the time, they don't.

What they usually need is for the existing kitchen to stop wasting space. Two spots account for most of it.

The first is above the wall cabinets. Standard cabinet heights leave a gap to the ceiling that does nothing except collect dust. Running the cabinetry all the way up recovers a full shelf in every cabinet and makes the ceiling feel higher at the same time.

The second is the corner. In plenty of layouts it's simply given up on. Fitted correctly, it holds everything you don't reach for daily.

This project used both, added a peninsula for prep space and seating, and put lighting under the cabinets so the counters stay usable at night. The footprint never changed — no walls came down.

The finish deserves a mention as well. Stained cabinets are making a big comeback, and for good reason — homeowners are moving away from cold, all-white kitchens and embracing the warmth, beauty and authenticity of natural wood. In a kitchen this size the effect is practical, not just decorative: grain gives the room depth, while all-white would have made it feel like a corridor.

The detail in this kitchen most people walk past: the backsplash.

It's Cambria quartz, run full height behind the range, from counter to hood. No tile, no grout lines, no seam breaking up the pattern — the veining just runs continuously across the whole wall.

It costs more than tile. It's also the thing that makes the cooking wall look finished rather than assembled, and it wipes down in seconds, which matters more than people expect behind a range.

The rest of the kitchen is built around that same restraint. Mouser cabinetry in a soft cream around the perimeter, with a deep charcoal island using the identical door profile — the colour changes, nothing else does, which is why the two tones read as one design. A custom black hood picks up the island colour and turns the range wall into the focal point. Fluted glass-front uppers, lit from within, break up what would otherwise be a long run of solid doors.

Warm oak flooring underneath keeps the palette from going cold.

If you've held back from stained cabinets because you were worried the kitchen would feel dark — this is the post for you.

Stained cabinets are making a big comeback, and for good reason. Homeowners are moving away from cold, all-white kitchens and embracing the warmth, beauty and authenticity of natural wood. But there's a practical reality that comes with it: wood absorbs light, where white paint reflects it. That's what makes stained cabinetry feel warm — and it's also why the lighting plan can't be an afterthought.

In this kitchen, the light is layered rather than dumped in from the ceiling.

A skylight brings daylight into the centre of the room, which matters in a galley layout where the windows only run down one side. Under-cabinet lighting covers the entire counter run, so there's no working in your own shadow. The glass-front uppers are lit from inside, which gives the wall depth instead of a flat block of cabinetry. Light quartz counters and a pale backsplash reflect everything back up.

Even the mudroom doorway pulls its weight, borrowing light through into the far end of the room.

Warm, grounded, and bright — you don't have to choose.
