Thanks everyone for the recent input- I just got the piano bench top back from Envision Design and couldn't wait to put the first coat of finish on!
I used a tung oil / citrus solvent blend from RMP Finishes. I will be trying a new product from them on another part of the bench.
Stay tuned for updates on this including the custom keyboard stand!

Daily poll- I'm creating a custom bench (with foldable top for storing sheet music, etc) and keyboard stand for an aspiring musician. I want to take it to the next level and would love your input!
What personalization(s) can take the bench to the next level? Inlaid music bars (maybe in walnut), a quote, something else? Pictures of ideas are welcome!

The bench has mahogany legs and top and the horizontal pieces are in butternut.

Here's a brief write-up on a current project that is shaping up to be next level.
It includes custom artwork, custom hand carved feet, the most technically difficult doors I have ever built, and MORE!
The master carvers in the article have welcomed me and walked me through carving- a new side of woodworking to me.

As darkness settles on a cold January evening, seven members of the Kosciusko County Woodcarvers Club make their way into the Senior Activity Center.

It's great to have local businesses like Envision Design! They lasered walnuts bookmarks I made for a church library as a surprise for a client. I used Shaper Studio to design the bookmarks.

I was asked to put together a woodworking demonstration for a school's pioneer days. While it took a little research, and while 1800s woodworking isn't my niche, I was able to throw this shaving horse together at the last minute. It was used for everything from shingles to bows to chair legs to kitchen utensils and more! It's amazing to see firsthand how robust and efficient some of the old tools are.

Butternut?
What is butternut?
What else should I make with butternut?
Has anyone ever tried a butternut?
This dresser I recently completed featured walnut and panels with walnut's cousin, 'butternut', also known as 'white walnut'. Butternut is a beautiful decorative wood, much softer than walnut and ideal for accents. It is in scarce supply due to a fungal disease. The fruit is reputed to be buttery and full, lacking the bitter taste that walnuts have. The wood was harvested years ago from the owner's property and provided to my work.
The dresser itself features a solid walnut top, slow close drawer slides and custom drawer pulls. It was finished with Woodwright Armor Var catalyzed varnish.

AFTER and BEFORE
What's behind the scenes counts!
This decorative wrap around the window was a replacement. I recently completed this to minimize maintenance and boost curb appeal.
Upon other professional recommendation, I used PVC trim which won't rot. The trim was held in place through dados, stainless fasteners, and supported and braced by ipe custom made ipe brackets and framing- the gold standard of exterior wood. The ipe was secured with 1/4" TimberLok fasteners- structural lag screws with integral washers anchored 1" + into the internal framing. Quad sealant and Sherwin Williams exterior Emerald paint were also used.
The original piece had rotting wood and fasteners that had deteriorated and crumbled under slight pressure.

So neat to see RMP finishes remix my video. After using it on over a hundred (hundreds?) of cutting boards, our personal kitchen table and more, it was what I reached for to bring out the depth of this massive walnut slab. Check out some of their products and take a look at the full video putting the table together if you haven't already.

I love the way tung oil brought out the depth of this piece with so many other positives!

A friend asked me for a live edge table with a top significantly heavier than I could lift. After finding no way to persuade him to make the top in three par...
