🔧🧰 **Workshop Wednesday: Why Caulk Cracks (and How to Fix It!)** 🧰🔧
Ever noticed the caulk around your tub, windows, or baseboards cracking or peeling away? You're not alone — and there's a reason it's happening!
**Why does caulk crack?**
👉 **Age & Drying Out:** Over time, caulk loses flexibility and dries out, especially if it wasn’t the right type for the job.
👉 **Improper Application:** If the surface wasn't clean or dry when applied, the caulk won't stick properly and will break down faster.
👉 **Movement & Shifting:** Homes naturally expand and contract with weather changes, and caulk needs to be flexible enough to move with them.
👉 **Wrong Product Used:** Using indoor caulk outside, or paintable caulk where waterproof is needed, can lead to premature cracking.
**How to fix it like a pro:**
1️⃣ **Remove the old caulk** – Use a utility knife or caulk remover tool to clean out all the damaged sections.
2️⃣ **Clean the area thoroughly** – Get rid of mold, dust, and debris so the new caulk bonds properly.
3️⃣ **Choose the right caulk** – For bathrooms and kitchens, use 100% silicone or a waterproof, mold-resistant option. For trim or baseboards, go with paintable latex caulk.
4️⃣ **Apply evenly** – Use a steady hand or caulk gun for a smooth bead, then smooth it out with a caulk finishing tool or your finger (dampened for easier smoothing).
5️⃣ **Let it cure** – Check the label, but most caulks need 24 hours to fully cure.
✅ **Pro Tip:** Want longer-lasting results? Use a high-quality, flexible caulk and apply it in low-humidity conditions!
