This sofa-now being reupholstered-is over 200 years old; perhaps it represents the third generation of owners , or even more-who can say?
Was is certain, however , is that it is a truly antique piece - one from an era when upholstery materials consisted of horsehair, natural cotton, and decorative tacks , applied using only a hamer , threat , and hand-sewing needles.
Even back in the 1980's I had the opportunity to work on a great deal of antique furniture . Over the years, I encountered exceptional craftsmen - Italians , Sicilians, and Neapolitans - who were true artist within the furniture industry.
And so, as the years go by, one accumulates an experience that is never forgotten; indeed, one truly never finishes learning this beautiful " ART OF UPHOLSTERY".
Sadly , however, this fine trade is becoming like the dinosaurs: this art form is now in danger extinction , for no one seems interested in learning it anymore.!💙💙
