Update on the Matt’s House

For those of you interested in local historic preservation, I’d like to update you on our most recent project completion.

This is the historic Matt’s House, located at 101 N Main St in Verona, WI, and it was built somewhere between 1848 and 1851. The building was nearly demolished in 2015. We developed a plan and purchased this structure from the City of Verona in 2016 and have spent the last 2 years restoring the exterior and renovating the interior.

We have an incredible tenant, the Purple Goose, which is a women’s boutique on the first floor and the second floor houses the Brick House Studio, which features various classes and markets and is available to rent for special occasions. Please check out their Website at Shopthepurplegoose.com to the learn more.

We are very grateful to the City of Verona, the people, staff and elected officials which entrusted us with this project. We appreciated the continuous interest and support from the public and we really hope you all enjoy the building.

Some update pics as the old woodwork goes back up as well as new trim for the rest of the building. I’m guessing the original trim was for a parlor. The rest of the trim in the building was pretty basic and probably not too old.

We are leaving the ceiling exposed and will have a bunch of fun lighting-

So I’ve been slow on update pics but a lot has been happening. The 2nd floor maple is finally going down after a lot of work leveling and patching the subfloor. Also, I had to tie in the really old (possibly original) staircase that needed to stay because it is cool but also grandfathered in since it is not current code.

It is all coming together and I’m happy how it is starting to make the space feel cleaner and brighter.

I did take a little time off from the floors to get all the river rock off the front lawn as well. I want to get grass planted while the weather is still mild, ie no snow or crazy heat!

Thanks for the continued interest and support. It is coming together and continues to be a fun building to put together -

Free River Rock!!!

I’ve been clearing out the front yard to plant grass and there is tons of rock that I’ve removed. If anyone wants any or knows anybody that does, please take as much as you want. It is in the back by the dumpster - thanks

Hi,

I hope you don’t mind me promoting a friend. He has really great salvage and I’ve bought and sold with him for years. Fun stuff and he is keeping it out of the landfill. Check him out - Troy

I’m patching the 2nd floor subfloor and took some pics of the cool timber that is holding up the 2nd floor. That giant beam is oak. The notches are only partially cut in and they carry the floor joists. I think it is kind of beautiful in its own way.

With the patching nearly done for the 2nd floor, I’m on to putting down the hardwood floors. The interior is rolling and I’m ready for the spring and all the landscaping!

Thanks for the continued interest -

Well the first floor maple is all in. I’m pretty happy. Nice stuff to work with. I think all the color provides a nice contrast to the brick walls and white trim. I’m especially happy with my transitions.

The hardwood floors kind of work like frosting on a cake somewhat. They make it all look nice and even out the high and low spots to some degree. The floors will never be perfectly level but now they are safe without tripping hazards and they actually provide some strength and structure by tying the 1st floor altogether. Kind of like a bunch of Legos.

The next step will be a little tweaking and strengthening of the original old-school steps to make them safe and sturdy under foot. I’m then going to finish up the woodwork around the windows and get a final coat of paint on. With something like 23 windows, I’d grown pretty tired of trim and gave it a rest when I started to get a little sloppy. Now, I’m ready for a break from the floors and excited to wrap up the windows.

Thanks for all the interest. This sure is a fun building to work on. Our old Verona ancestors sure knew how to build them back in the day!

Here are some update pics on Matt’s house. I’m liking the maple and it is going down easy. It’s amazing how it is leveling out the undulations of the old floorboards and framing. I had really worried about it and it turns out it wasn’t necessary.

Also some pics of a little white baseboard to show how it will look finished.

The flooring is really cleaning the place up and the dog is pretty content to sleep on it in a sunny window. More pics to come when I get more done- Troy

The trim is up now upstairs and just needs a bunch of nail holes filled and a last coat of paint. I was really anxious how a classic-style trim would look against the brick and I’m happy with it. However this is just the upstairs- only 9 of 23 windows done! But there is a system now and hopefully it will go quickly. I’m looking forward to putting the maple floors down in the new year-

The first mock-up of window trim in Matt’s House. I’ve been assembling it assembly-line style, as there are 23 windows and 4 exterior doors. There were 4 or 5 different trim styles throughout the house and this is inspired by several of the more elaborate predecessors. I think it has some nice subtle colonial/federal aspects and cleans up the openings while still letting the brick be the hero-
