Gluing up a MASSIVE end grain board! Ben even needs Kathleen’s help to work quickly with the glue. He glues, she sets - repeat 28 times until all of the strips are laid. Then we clamp it within an inch of its life. Our boys like to watch all the glue squeeze out. 😆 Ben will sand off all the glue beads, put it through the drum sander, rout a smooth edge the whole way ‘round, and finish it off with our in-house board conditioner. No Big Deal.

We don’t want to leave you hanging… Ben got a drum sander! This is the biggest upgrade the shop has seen in quite a few years. It’s going to save Ben HOURS of work on his end grain cutting boards. He’s already run several boards through, and they come out glass smooth!

Because the end grain boards have the fibers going up and down (we talked about that in an earlier post), Ben’s other tools are too aggressive, and can cause the fibers on the edge of the board to chip out. 😬 He’s had to use electric hand sanders, and a single board could take several hours to get them perfectly flat. The drum sander is gentle and slow, meaning the boards get an even, planar sanding in a fraction of the time.

So get ready to see even more end grain boards at Ben’s table! We’re ready to start cranking these babies out!!

We’re back at it, baby! Bringing you another awesome summer line-up of woodworking at the Valparaiso Market! Ben will be at the opening weekend market this Saturday (June 6) from 9am to 1pm. We’re always excited to support our local market, and we hope you’ll support all the wonderful local vendors!

You can also find Ben in his usual spot u see the pavilion on 6/20, 7/25, and 8/1!

End grain cutting boards actually start out as a biiiiiiiiiig loooooooooong panel. When the glue dries, Ben will cut dozens of strips from the panel, rotate them 90-degrees so the end grain is facing up, and then glue the strips together! 🌈⭐️
