THE MOST EXPENSIVE INCH IN INTERIOR DESIGN

An inch doesn't sound like much.

Until it's the inch that determines whether a chair fits comfortably beneath a table.

Whether a walkway feels generous or cramped.

Whether a sofa sits beautifully within the architecture or overwhelms it.

Great design happens at every scale, but some of its most important decisions come down to remarkably small measurements.

It's why experienced designers don't just look at dimensions on a specification sheet. They think about how those dimensions interact with everything around them.

Because sometimes, one inch changes the entire experience of a room.

What's one measurement you always double-check before approving a furniture order?

Every season brings another list.

What's in.

What's out.

What's replacing what.

So here's our October Anti-Trend Report:

Great proportion is still in.

Craftsmanship is still in.

Comfort is still in.

Materials that reward a closer look are still in.

Understanding your client's life is still in.

Having a point of view is definitely still in.

Trends can introduce us to new ideas.

But good design was never supposed to be a checklist.

Here's your October creative challenge.

Walk into the showroom.

Choose one material you can't stop touching.

Don't choose the sofa first.

Don't choose a style.

Don't even choose the color palette.

Start with the material.

Then ask:

What would complement it?

What would contrast it?

What happens when something rough sits beside something refined?

What happens when matte meets reflective?

Sometimes changing where you START the creative process changes where you finish.

Two pieces can come from completely different worlds and still share something:

Proportion.

Craftsmanship.

Color temperature.

Line.

Material.

Attitude.

That's how rooms begin to feel collected rather than purchased as a set.

Everything doesn't need to match.

It just needs a reason to be there.

A table isn't just something you place in a room.

It establishes relationships.

How far the chairs sit apart.

How people move around it.

How conversation happens.

How the surrounding furniture relates to its scale.

That's one reason pieces from Artistica Home can be so interesting to specify. Tables, consoles, and casegoods aren't simply objects filling floor plans.

They're architectural participants in the room.

Change the table...

and you can change the entire composition around it.

Try this thought experiment.

What if 80% of the room felt beautifully resolved...

and 20% broke the rules?

A sculptural chair.

An unexpected pattern.

A piece from another era.

A surprising material.

A color that technically shouldn't work, but somehow does.

That 20% might be exactly what keeps the other 80% from becoming predictable.

Because sometimes good design is about knowing the rules.

And memorable design is knowing exactly where you can bend them.

Possibly the most exciting sentence a designer can hear.

And one of the most dangerous. 😏

Because "surprise me" doesn't mean abandon everything you've learned about the client.

It means understand them well enough to show them something they wouldn't have chosen for themselves.

The unexpected textile.

The bolder silhouette.

The wallcovering they initially would have scrolled past.

The combination they never imagined working together.

That's where expertise becomes exciting.

Great designers don't just give clients what they already know they like.

Sometimes they introduce them to what they'll love next.

There are pieces designed to survive a trend cycle.

And there are pieces designed to survive life.

That's an important distinction.

Hancock & Moore has built its reputation around handcrafted upholstery, particularly leather seating, where construction and craftsmanship matter just as much as the initial appearance.

Because furniture doesn't stay untouched after installation.

People sit.

Gather.

Read.

Nap.

Entertain.

Live.

For designers, longevity isn't separate from aesthetics.

Sometimes longevity is one of the most beautiful specifications you can make.

Open your latest mood board.

Look at it for five seconds.

Now look away.

What do you remember?

That's an interesting test.

Because clients won't remember every SKU, finish code, fabric name, or individual selection.

They'll remember the story those selections created together.

Maybe it was warmth.

Drama.

Calm.

Playfulness.

Sophistication.

Individual products build a room.

But a clear point of view makes it memorable.

There’s something unmistakable about furniture that comes from a deep tradition of making.

Costantini Pietro traces its roots to Italy, where generations of furniture craftsmanship have shaped the company's approach to contemporary design.

And that intersection is fascinating.

Because heritage doesn't require designing for the past.

Traditional knowledge of materials, construction, proportion, and craft can become the foundation for something thoroughly modern.

For designers, that creates another kind of value:

A piece can feel current without feeling temporary.
