I would like to post this in the reviews but it's not letting me:
This review is a long time coming. I am posting as Amy Miller Gregg friend and former apprentice of Marvin, not as the page administrator.
I worked with Marvin D. Seagroves for about 2 years and saw first hand what a perfectionist he is. He might joke, "Aahh that's good enough.", but I've seen him measure and re-measure over and over again trying to figure out why a finished dimension was coming out 1/16th off. One sixteenth of an inch, that's tiny! (unless you are a woodworker. Lol) Then, I've watched him correct the problem. That's dedication to perfection. He is a true craftsman who takes pride in his work.
The pictures are of a project he did for me. The 4 drawer chest was ready-built and unfinished so he did the stain, finish and hardware on it. The headboard is special to me because it is the one my parents set up housekeeping with in 1956 and my Mom refinished it to that dark walnut color many years back. I wanted a bedroom set to match the headboard as it is the only original piece of the set I have left. The slide piece had gotten broken and no longer worked. Marvin made a new slide piece for the headboard and built the 2 matching nightstands then stained them all to match the headboard and the Arrow of Light Cub Scout Award (hanging) that he had previously made for my son.
If you are considering having something built vs buying ready-made, you will spend more on the custom piece. But the quality, customization to your needs and wants and the quality of materials- real wood vs particle board- far exceed anything you buy from a store. He can also work with a variety of materials to help keep prices down and he's willing to work with you to help determine the best material for your needs. Marvin is also cost conscience and very frugal with the materials he's working with to make sure there is not much waste. I will add that he can do nothing about the costs of the raw materials and hardware (drawer slides, hinges, etc.), they are expensive, just like everything else these days, but Marvin can explain your options to you to get the look and the quality that you want at the best possible price.
If you've been thinking about a project, go ahead and have him bid it. The cost of supplies will not be going down anytime soon. Get your projects done now while supplies are "cheap". Lol
