I'm late on the final pumpkin update. We harvested them the last weekend of September. I picked over 200 total pumpkins, including 11 white polar bears and over 12 large orange. Have several different specialities as well. This past weekend we decorated the yard. Really happy with how this season turned out, especially with basically no rain the last two months.

Happy Labor Day! Pumpkin patch day 100! Just a couple of weeks to go and things are looking good. The edges are getting dry and some plants are starting to thin but everything still looks pretty healthy. I'll probably start to harvest a few in the next week or so with the majority of harvest coming between Sept 13 and 20. There are some good sized ones this year!

Haven't had a pumpkin post this year. We planted roughly 200 seeds of 18 varieties. I had a little 125-140 seeds germinate. Things started a little slow with the cool spring, but they really exploded during the hot humid weather in July. Like usually fighting some squash vine borers and losing a few plants but most are looking good!

Haven't posted anything mainly because I haven't done much but I did just finish a writing desk. All solid elm wood, curved leg detail, three drawers. Real happy with how this turned out. I tried new things on this, such as making a template for the leg curves and pattern bits on my router, and complete dowel joinery.

Happy fall everyone!

Here is this year's pumpkin haul! Not too bad all in all. There are a few more that are still green but slowly turning orange. Most of them look real good though.

Today is day 100 for the pumpkins! Made it through the year, there is some orange in the patch, and still a few green vines. Harvest will begin soon, with the shortest varieties getting picked in the next day or two and some of the larger varieties waiting another week or so. A summer of work is almost over!

2 weeks since the last update and the pumpkin rollercoaster is continuing. Generally, things are looking good but, up close, things are struggling. Majority of the vines are still looking good, and the patch as a whole is almost completely full. It is difficult at best, impossible in some areas, to walk through now. A few yellow leaves, which I would expect at this time. The most disappointing is my Atlantic Giant vine has died. The pumpkin got to about 25" in circumference and quit growing. The backup vine wasn't producing any pumpkins, then this past week 3 new ones appear to have started. We'll see if they last. I haven't got a watermelon to grow all summer, but one appeared this last week. This time last year I was harvesting them. I don't understand this entire season and I still don't expect much.

End of July pumpkin update, finally with some better news! The squash vine borers surgery appears to be mostly successful. We did lose 6 or 7 plants that I pulled out a few days ago. The rest seem to be doing ok. There is one or two more that I'm not sure will make it but they were ok enough to give them another week or two. I won't say we're in the clear and everything is fine, honestly I still won't be surprised if one day everything is dead, but hopefully we'll make this last 6 or 7 weeks ok! In addition to the pictures below, I'm still hoping we get a few white stackers.

I have spent the week battling an infestation of squash vine borers in the pumpkins. This 3 cycle pain starts as a moth, which lays eggs on vine stems, then the eggs hatch to a grub type thing, which then digs into the vine and lives inside. This is what kills the plants. I found them last Saturday and pulled many out of my vines. Since then I've been working to strengthen the plants back up, mixing applications of fertilizer and fungicide with some extra waterings. I'm optimistic we'll get a harvest still, just hoping it's not too bad. Some of the plants have set pumpkins and are growing and some are getting ready to bloom and pollinate.

I've been slacking on posts here this summer. The 2024 garden was a little late getting in due to rain and commitments, but everything was planted by May 31. Then the first few weeks the weather was cool, only low to mid 70's and even cooler at night, which was great weather but not for pumpkin growth. The last week or so things have warmed up and started to take off! Did a replant on June 17 of a few areas that didn't germinate and those new seeds are starting to come up now. Hoping for a successful year and lots of pumpkins, corn, squash, and melons in a couple more months!
