The UA Community Garden (UACG) is a space that is available for local and campus community members to grow and consume their own food. Founded by the Garden in the Desert (GITD) team and open for community use in the spring of 2012, the UA Community Garden will feature 42 sunken beds measuring 18x3 or 20x3 feet each. All beds have have drip tape irrigation and compost amended soil. Other features
and resources of the garden includes: a three bin composting system, a stocked shed with tools available for use, a comfortable ramada available for all, and adobe benches. Potential future projects include but are not limited to: a chicken coop, aquaculture development, a fruit tree orchard, and a permaculture food forest perimeter. Workshops, community events, informational packets, and other gardening resources will allow community members of all levels of gardening expertise to manage and manage and enjoy the gardening space. The purpose of gardening within a community space is to receive and share support in the endeavor of growing tasty local and organic food. We hope to see the UACG become a space where individuals teach and are taught, both in practical growing techniques as well as in community issues. The GITD aspires to have the UACG evolve into a space for all community members to connect with their food, their land, and their neighbors.
