🪑 FOR SALE: Original Design Ammonia Fumed White Oak Stick Chair $1,000

Built as an original design in the spirit of American folk furniture. The chair has a casual sit with open arms. Using high quality white oak with particular attention to material and grain selection, this chair is built for a lifetime of use. The rich, deep color of the chair is achieved through ammonia fuming, a time honored process in which ammonia reacts with the tannins in the white oak to produce a smoky, unmatched patina that no stain can achieve. From there, it was oiled waxed and buffed out.

Free delivery within 2 hours of Scranton, PA. Other shipping arrangements can be made nationally. DM me with any questions or if you have an interest in purchasing.

Well, I tried my hand at designing and building a stick chair. I'm really happy with how it turned out. Made a few mistakes and learned a lot in return. What do YOU think? Any input or critique on design or otherwise? Hit me up and let me know. Looking for genuine feedback.

Some highlights:

🟤 Made from quarter sawn oak from three places: , .brothers, and some slab dealer outside of Allentown, PA.

🟠 Traditional wedged and pinned mortise and tenon joinery.

🟤 Sticks and seat shaped and saddled with a mix of traditional hand tools.

🟠 A multi step finishing process. Starting with a 24 hour ammonia fume, followed by a light sand and soaking coat of half and half tung oil from RMP Finishes. Next, the chair cured for three days in the sun. And finally a coat of soft wax 2.0 from Lost Art Press that was buffed out.

If you made it this far, Thanks!

🎉 Finished 🎉 Over the past few days I was able to finish up this quarter sawn white oak corner vanity. It is an original design that was challenging to get through, design wise. The challenge was making a really basic style box both look good and stand out, but also just be a vanity. This was a direct replacement for corner vanity that was originally there. The customer wanted a "not too dark" tone to the finish, but still have the rays pop. The customer is going to provide their own top, I believe soapstone. I couldn't believe how much different this piece looked when it was in the dingy shop lights for the last few weeks, compared to how it looks out in natural light.

Some Highlights:

🟡 An original design made from some awesome material: Quarter sawn white oak from Bailey Wood Products in Kempton, PA

🔶 A few different joinery methods throughout, including mortise and tenon, floating tenon, and some pocket holes 😳

🟡 Careful material selection to highlight the quarter sawn medullary rays.

🔶 Nice little arts and crafts details: pinned tenons, iron hardware, and arches and chamfers.

🟡 Finished with a wipe of 28% ammonia, medium brown oil based stain, two coats of blonde shellac and some wipe on polyurethane. After, that was sanded a bit, then waxed and buffed. Finally one quick coat of black wax, buffed out.

If you made it this far, thanks! This piece had a bunch of challenges to overcome, design wise, and I'm really happy with the results. If you're looking for a vanity, a new door, a built-in...or if you need a special piece of furniture for a certain spot in your home or business, don't hesitate to reach out. We can come up with something great together 😃.

🎉 Finished 🎉 Swipe 👉 Over the past few days I was able to finish and deliver this maple entryway bench. It is an original design that was challenging to both design and build. The customer gave me the general dimensions and few other parameters: drawers, shoe shelf, high back. The idea was to have a place and landing spot to change shoes and store all the dog walking gear.

Some Highlights:

🟡 An original design made from some awesome material: beautiful hard maple and curly maple, from Bailey Wood Products, INC in Kempton, PA

🔶 A few different joinery methods throughout, including mortise and tenon, floating tenon, and a few dominos.

🟡 Careful material selection to highlight the curly maple, but not beat you over the head with it.

🔶 Nice little texture carving, here and there, for visual interest and to add something to extra to end grain.

🟡 Some cool vintage brass drawer pulls, that I cleaned up and polished, just a bit.

🔶 Finished with a coat of Glancy's tung oil mix, two coats of blonde shellac and some wipe on polyurethane. After, that was sanded a bit, then waxed and buffed.

🎉 Done! Over the past week or so, I made the nine hour trip from Northeast PA to Covington KY for a week long stick chair making class. The class was instructed by Chris Schwarz from Lost Art Press. All in all, it was a really great experience and I'm happy I was able to finally get in a class (I've been trying for years). I learned a lot and probably forgot a lot, too. I've never built a chair before and I'm happy with the results here. I think it's a great representation of the week as a whole. There are tool marks all over it, small mistakes here and there, the legs a just a touch wonky, and there wasn't enough time for me to do any one process fully. So, this will sit somewhere in my home as a reminder of where I started with building chairs.

Boot jack is by me and is available for purchase.

I spent the last week down in Covington Kentucky with Chris at Lost Art Press learning to build this stick chair. It was a great experience all around. There was a little bit of work to be done, finish wise, at home. So, glamour shots and a full write up coming soon.

I got down to the Back Mountain Trail over the weekend to cut some trees from the path. The initial picture looked like it was only one tree. It turned out to be three pretty big trees that came down. A few of us got them cleared up in two hours, or so. I love that this trail is only a 1/4 mile from the home and shop and we use it regularly. It runs from Luzerne all the way up to Dallas. Check it out if you're in the area.

I don't think I posted this finished piece on here. I was waiting on some finished pics from the customer after the counter was installed. But here you go! Better late than never 🙂

A few months ago I delivered this Shaker style bathroom vanity. It is an original design that was really fun to design and build. The customer gave me the general dimensions and said I was able to go wild. They just wanted to check the final design and pick the material. The top will be a beautiful slab of marble with an undermount sink.

Some Highlights:

🟡 An original design made from some awesome material: hard maple, curly maple, and quarter sawn white pine almost all from Bailey Wood Products in Kempton, PA

🔶 Frame and panel construction for the doors and body with a dovetailed bracket base

🟡 One piece highly figured curly maple panels for all the panels.

🔶 Beautiful butt hinges and vintage k***s and pulls that were cleaned up and buffed to match the sheen of the hinges

🟡 Finished with two coats of blonde shellac and two coats of wipe on polyurethane. After, that was sanded a bit, then waxed and buffed.

If you made it this far, thanks! This piece had a bunch of new challenges to overcome and I'm really happy with the results. If you're looking for a Shaker vanity, an entry bench, a built-in...or if you need a special piece of furniture for a certain spot in your home or business, don't hesitate to reach out. We can come up with something great together 😃.

👉 Year in review 👉 Here are the majority of pieces that got shipped out or delivered this year. It wasn't the most productive year for the shop, BUT....the quality of furniture has gone up, considerably. Thanks for following along this year! I appreciate any comment, critique, or like. If you purchased something from me, whether it be a bootjack or a piece of free standing furniture, know that you keep the shop going and thanks so much! Keep an eye out for bigger and better this next year.
