The base is really coming along! Today I got the rest of the tenons cut for the knee braces and then milled and cut to length the two top stretchers. Then I cut the half blind dovetails on those top stretchers as well. I’m really pleased with how it all came out. On Monday I’ll start chopping mortises for all of these tenons and pretty soon we’ll be gluing up the base!

Great day in the shop today! Top supports are mortised and tenoned, knee braces are laid out and I started hand cutting the tenons. The is coming along! The layouts were SUPER easy thanks to my .toolworks square…that is definitely my favorite tool right now!

I got a good bit of work done on the base today. I made myself laugh out loud when I realized I’d cut a 1.5”x3” tenon instead of a 2”x3” tenon. But I glued on some scraps and fixed it - no problem! Then I cut the rest of the tenons on the posts and I did the layout for the top supports. The last picture is the first two pieces of the table extension system cut to size.
(Plus I got the next stage of finishing done on that Christmas present! But no pics of that until after Christmas!)

I can’t show everything I worked on today in the shop because it’s a Christmas present. But here are some closeups the first few coats of shellac on that piece I had to refinish from the other day! I sanded it back to wood, went through the grits, and got 3 coats of shellac on it. Next up is polishing and boxing it up! I also did some layout on parts for the dining table.

Got to spend some time in the shop today. Got the feet for the laid out, rough cut, and the mortises chopped (by hand)...

So I started today in the shop by accidentally gluing a drawer closed. Then I managed to get the mortising bit for the mortiser stuck in a test piece, then I burned a forstner bit, and finally I had to start sanding back finish on a project to start it over because I messed it up. 😒 on the upside, however, I now have business cards and t-shirts!

My day at the shop got cut short today because…well, life happens sometimes. But I still had time to mill and trim the leg blanks for the coffee table and line these drawers with felt. I also put the next coat of finish on a project that these drawers are a part of - but no peeking! - it’s a Christmas present! Next up will be to continue turning this stack of poplar and cherry into the dining room table.
