Earlier this year we had the opportunity to host our friends from ANA. They recently shared this video of their visit to Los Angeles, which included a trip to the Victorville boneyard and MotoArt studios in Torrance, CA. Hope to see them again soon!

Only one Lockheed L-300 was ever built. In 1972, it was donated to NASA and transformed into the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, a flying infrared telescope that helped discover the rings of Uranus, detect Pluto’s atmosphere, and study Supernova 1987A.

In March 2025, the MotoArt team worked with NASA at Moffett Field to carefully dismantle the aircraft. Every step was done with precision and respect to preserve its skin and honor its legacy.

Now, this incredible piece of space and aviation history lives on as PlaneTags.

The vertical stabilizer of NASA’s Kuiper Airborne Observatory deserves more than storage. It deserves to inspire.

MotoArt is currently looking for a permanent home for this historic piece of aerospace and astronomy history. We hope to see it proudly displayed where it can be appreciated by future generations and continue to tell the story of the Lockheed L-300 that helped unlock the mysteries of the universe.

This Thursday, June 13, 2024, we are releasing C-119 Flying Boxcar PlaneTags, made from 53-3191. In February 2022, the team went out to Tucson, Arizona to clean out a retired C-119 which had been used as a storage hut. They encountered a rattlesnake but they got the plane.
